Is there a list of possible messages?
My XC70 (2014 plate, 2015 model) never fails to surprise me with the messages it can display. I am used to the 'time to book routine service' (or similar) notice but have recently seen 'Routine maintenance overdue' flash up (car was booked in for the next day).
Then, when I collected the car from the garage (Marshal Volvo Cambridge) the service manager brought it to me, got out and handed me the key, all nicely sanitised, while the engine was left running. On getting in the car there was the message 'key removed from car' (or similar). Now I never knew you could remove the key while the engine was running and also knew nothing of such a message. I admit I did not know quite what to do... replace key, switch engine off and start again or what. In the end I just put key in slot and came home with the message still there. But to the point: Is there a definitive list of messages that can be displayed? I am sure I have never seen such a list published anywhere ... the Manual does not contain a list. Cheers, Phil |

No, there's no public list. For a good reason, of course, since if Volvo should keep such a list, they have to update it to keep it current, if they add something in their cars. Or the list would be pointless.
Some of the possible messages are listed in the manual. Removing the key doesn't stop the engine, since that would imply that if the contact with the key is lost whilst driving, a dangerous situation could occur, if the engine suddenly stops. But if you do stop the engine, you can't start again, if the key isn't in the car (or in the lock, if you don't have the keyless option). |

Hmmmm ... I can see no reason why they could not provide a list of messages associated with the various functions as set out in the Owner's Manual.
For instance: When your car is due for a routine service you will see the message ' Time for Routine Maintenance' appear one month before the due date. If a service is not done by the due date you will see the message 'routine maintenance overdue'. Other messages relate to e.g. press footbrake before starting. Or: if you remove key while engine is running, a message will appear telling you the key is not in the slot. The messages are there ... why not make people aware of them? I see nothing to be kept secret. Just thoughts .... Cheers, Phil |

Well, again, some of them are listed in the manual. Probably those Volvo thought could benefit from a more detailed explanation. But if you don't understand the message "Key removed from the car" when you see it on the dashboard, I doubt reading it in the manual would make it better.
People in general don't read manuals. I doubt explanations like "The message Press footbrake to start the engine menas that you must press the footbrake to start the engine" will encourage any more people to read the manuals. Last edited by apersson850; Jul 1st, 2020 at 21:29. |

Just to clarify ... I think I am quite able to understand the messages that appear. My reason for starting this thread was to ask if there was a list of messages that can appear ... out of pure interest, that's all.
The 'key removed ...' message I had never seen before and did not know about it being possible. It was only by searching on this forum that I found the explanation but as I have a download of the manual on my PC it might have been nice to find the information there. The messages are clearly components in a very complex set of circuits and logic / algorithms. They have been built in to impart information according to a set of particular circumstances. As above, I asked the question out of simple curiosity ... maybe I am the 'simple' component. Cheers, Phil |

The key removed from car message will also appear if you remove the key from the slot while the engine is running and any door is opened. Even if the key stays in the car and a passenger gets out. Somewhat annoying really.

Obviously Volvo have lists, but I've never seen them outside Volvo. In our two XC70 cars, the missing key message doesn't show up until the key is outside the car. But with cars without the keyless option, I can see that they have to declare the key as Status: Missing as soon as it's outside the slot. |
