Thanks for your replies all.
To conclude (as I hate unresolved posts)

The garage offered to split the repair bill, but still £2k each +

I have no more faith, I bough a bad one

They bought the car off me for Trade + £500 = £5500, so I lost £2.500 in 3 months

Harsh lesson learned, but the sensible option - cut my losses, and potential future losses.

The garage is dishonest - there is no such thing as the gearbox was 'moved' so the sludge got in the solenoids. There is also a chance they took the transmission from your car and sold it to someone else. A XC90 good working transmission is worth gold because many had issues and need it to be replaced. I would put here the name of the garage so we know about it.

Sounds like the garage have got off Scot free and got a bargain car that's a relatively cheap fix with the right facilities.
I wonder if they offer this "solution" often......hmm.

Hi all

sorry for interupting

My xc90 2004 D5 with 90K is currently at the Jaguary dealer, it is within 3 month warranty.

It has developed a gearbox oil leak. Stratstone Jaguar have said that a seal needs to be replaced. They have booked the car in with a Driver transmission based in Moseley, Birmimgham on Thursday.

is there anything that you guys would recommend changing since the auto box will be worked on?

many thanks

Early US XC90 models with the T6 engine had a flawed auto transmission. Most owners simply lost their money. Reason was the auto transmission could not handle the torque of the T6 engine. Maybe the diesel model has a similar issue since a diesel engine has more torque. In all cases, a leaking transmission is not just about a seal. I would return the car.
