Default Spare Keys

Hi all

I have one set of Keys for my Volvo, Main key and filler cap key.

Where would one go to get spares made?

Have tried a couple of the Supermarkets and a couple of local Key places that cut keys for cars etc.

I imagine they will be about 25p lol No electronics.

Any Timpsons should be able to do most & that's what I've used in the past.

I think the last few yrs of the 9xx's they had a key with an immobiliser chip in them but if yours hasn't you should be ok with any keycutter.

Nope, no alarm or immob on my 740.

I'll try Timpsons thanks, the one here is in town center - I never go into town lol.

If you find they don't have the key blanks, they are available to purchase on eBay.

I managed to get Volvo logo ones for mine, like this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/160864056064

The seller above that I used doesn't have them listed at the moment, but other sellers have them... for a lot more ££!

Suspect your '87 740 GL has an OEM lock made by Neiman (another German company who are now no longer who eventually ended up in the hands of Valeo). Valeo have stopped producing this of style lock if if they haven't stopped trading now!

However, if you go to a good locksmith with your key and insist that they use a blank made by Silca (an Italian company whose key blanks are readily available throughout in the UK) and suggest to them that they use or get a Silca blank marked NE51 you will not be disappointed (assuming they can actually cut keys!)

Having bought a couple of blanks from eBay, my local independent DIY/hardware store cut them to match my existing one for £5 the pair

Thanks to this thread, I've bought a couple of volvo logo fuel filler cap keys on eBay too, so will be taking them to be cut soon

Along similar lines, the later style key as used in the 760 and possibly the 940s - anybody know if these are "dealer only" or if they can be cut these days by a Timpsons or similar?

I remember when Vauxhall introduced a similar looking key, they were allegedly laser-cut so were dealer only.

Also if anyone has a green fuel cap with key they no longer want/need, i'd be interested in buying it!

Pray Sir ... wot's a later style 760/940 key look like?

I once had a green filler cap .... but in 1994 when the lock failed 'under my lifetime guarantee' the M Dealer supplied a black one ... so I just painted it green from some leftover green touch-up paint from my '78 744 saloon. It's looking a bit well used now

I'll add a photo of the key later Bob.

Funny thing is i still have a green filler cap, just no key for it! When i bought the car, i was given a bent locker key and told it was the proper key for the cap! Yeah, right!

Volvo only supply the black cap now for about £18 i think but i particularly want the green one as the car was supplied with a green one from new and being a 1988 model suitable for unleaded should really have a green one.
Also round here a couple of filling stations have started doing Attended Service again and i can just imagine what would happen if i let them put fuel in the car - they'd see the black cap and assume (because everything else is these days) that it's a diseasel. Don't want the hassle, grief or other problems that would cause!
