DTC information display on XC70 2007
Is it possible for some one unscrupulous to deactivate the DTC message display?
I Just got hold of this XC70 2007, car dealer said they got the garage to clear the faults. Been trying to do the code check with the stalk and light button but its displaying nothing at all, i can see it very dimly illuminating in the back ground but screen wont display any messages at all. Car is running fine, hasnt gone into limp mode or anything, fresh mot registered online but im worried they have some how disabled the display window to hide any remaining faults. My own garage said they shouldnt be able to hide warning messages but something isnt right as the particular screen is showing nothing at all. My garage was too busy to plug it in, although that was my first port of call. To go get the fault codes read.

Sounds like a backlight failure of the screen

Was fine last week when I checked the codes, this is why I am a bit worried. Thanks for the suggestion.
Been booting it about today on the motorway and gave it a bit of gentle off roading, trying to see if the car complains but all seems fine.

Like said, sounds like back light bulbs have failed. Easy enough to change, loads of guides on here on taking cluster (DIM) out, bulbs are on the back of it.
If you have a look yourself, make sure you disconnect the car battery first or you’ll set all manner of fault codes if the ignition is inadvertently turned on with the cluster removed. |

I was pressing them to have their garage inform me that the AWD was functioning.
And when i first test drove it, it wheel spinned on some gravel and the message window showed spin control disabled. So its possible to disable the back light, so the display wont show. This makes me think its maybe been intentional. I better get under the car and try to rotate the propshaft.....

Car seems to drive lovely, it is definately more skittish and wallowy compared to my old V70 but thats to be expected I think, with the ride height, crazy torque and short first gears.
There is some discussion regarding the power delivery to the front wheels, if the AWD isnt working. Eg, too much power to the front. But the AWD only seems to transfer quite a low amount of the power to the back wheels regardless.

How many miles on it? I think even a 2007 may still have the angle gear problem at the AWD
As mentioned above by several, it is possible to simply remove the two small bulbs from the DIM display to have the display go 'dark'. You should still be able to read it with a flash light. Careful to undo the car battery if replacing the light bulbs

But wouldn't a 2007 have LED's as opposed to removable bulbs?

With regards to the AWD, I wouldnt be surprised it has failed with 215k on the clock. Its not really a big deal, just more disappointing that they tried to hide it to keep their price, rather than be up front.( and now i have to **** about sorting the DIM bulbs) and the AWD if i want it. So transfer box etc is probably added to the list of things needed done to make it properly functional..... I would love to be able to work on cars I get but where I park is way too much on a slope and dangerous. The right tools and savy I doubt I will ever have also. It runs sweet, Im hoping I havent bought a Lemon. They offer a one month warranty but I dont hold out too much hope of them properly honouring it. All cars have their issues, I do like that 5 pot thing. The 10 valve was quite good for torque, engine and body work is still perfect, after 23 years. The D5 feels quite ludicrously torqued but its fun.
