Default 940 Bent Half Shaft

My two questions:
- How did one of the half shafts on my 1994 2.4TIC 940 get bent?
- (More important) Where can I get a replacement half shaft?

Background:
For weeks I had been trying to solve the problem of vibration when braking which was getting worse and worse. I assumed (as in previous years) that changing the front disks would solve the problem. No luck there. I tried again, installing new Bosch disks and I measured the run-out (0.01 mm, 0.02 mm). Well within what Hayes says is permissible (0.06 mm).

I turned the car over to the local garage (I'm in Normandy) who tried another set of front disks - still bad vibration on braking. Garage owner is a former Volvo service manager and he knows 940s. There was a tiny bit of play in the front suspension system and he replaced several joints - still bad vibration on braking.

Then he looked at the rear disks - one (RHS) had serious easily visible run out - about 5 mm (3/16 inch). He removed the disk and the hub on the half shaft was visibly wonky when turning.

First Question: How did this happen? The car has been driven normally on good roads slowing for the occasional speed bumps, not carrying heavy loads. Do Volvo half shafts get bent spontaneously?

Second Question (more important): How can I obtain a replacement half shaft as soon as possible? Skandix told me that they are no longer supplied by Volvo - Volvo part number 6814100. Any leads will be gratefully received.

Martin, I have never heard of a half-shaft becoming bent in service before and absolutely no idea of how that might have happened. It is a new one on me!

As the part is NLA, I think your best bet for a replacement would be through a breaker. I know of several in the UK who may be able to help, but you would need to ask if they will send to France and what the cost of that might be in these post-Brexit days.

Regards, John.

John, Thank you.
Do any of them have a website or an email address so I can ask them?

Two local to me that I have used in the past are Volsaa at Derby and C.P. Motors at Tamworth. A quick Google search will take you to their websites, and others are available ...

Regards, John.

Yep another guy taking perfectly good saveable/running cars off the road, what's the point in breaking them all when there won't be any left for the parts to go on? Atleast when I was breaking them they were rot boxes and or beyond repair/badly damaged to the point nobody would want them.

As for cause, if you’ve not hit a curb or deep pothole has the car been raised using a jack under the differential?
