I think it's more likely a engine failure that might have sounded like a downshift due to the noise, which then caused the smoke and subsequent power loss.

The 6 speed manual box is just that - no electronics, it cannot command a downshift on its own without the selectors being physically moved. By the same token - I don't believe it has an ECU to interrogate.

If the engine has just gone thermonuclear and is leaping around on its mounts then I could envisage the stick might wobble alarmingly and give the impression of movement. That aside, there is no mechanism whatsever by which a manual box can actually change gear itself...unless it is haunted.

I can understand the OP being rather upset, but both the assumptions being made about what may have failed, what caused the failure , and their considered response to it were rather...misguided.

But hey we all have bad days. Hopefully the techies get to the bottom of this one and it turns out to be a clear cut warranty issue, he gets his repair for free, faith is regained and the universal balance of ying and yang restored.

That must be a very scary experience. I hope all are ok?

Regarding the fault, if this is a traditional manual it will not have changed gear like that by itself. Firstly it does not have the capacity to change gears on its own, secondly you would not physically be able to push it into 1st at those speeds. 2nd hear inwards would not likely cause that failure.

I would be looking at a gear shaft that has let go or some catastrophic failure that has caused rotational binding/degradation.

A collapsed wheel bearing for example will lead to that level of deceleration.

Are all 4 tyres looking good and with no ‘flat spots’ or worn patches (this would suggest the wheel has locked up?

I needed a replacement manual box on my S40 some years ago as it developed a tendency to jump out of gear into neutral. However, having driven several cars with failed clutches by manually matching engine and wheel shaft speed to change gear, I don’t see how it could jump into a lower gear itself - it’s hard enough when you try and difficult to force even with synchromesh. Be interesting to see what the dealer thinks once it’s stripped down. As others have said hopefully this will lead to a satisfactory warranty conclusion.

Default Must be a warranty claim surely

A 2022 vehicle must be under warranty surely.?? Only doubt would be if OP had not had the vehicle serviced to schedule. It may be with 18month service intervals a service is not even due yet!
Car ownership is not straight forward and breakdowns happen. Its how the garage deals with them that sorts the excellent from the rubbish.

Cheers
Bob

Clearly his missus distracted him then downshifted the gear for a laugh!

But in all seriousness, she probably thought that'll learn him to buy an NPC mobile and not a proper Volvo!!

Thought I would issue an update, the clutch was replaced at a cost of £1600.00. Yes I was made to pay no warranty on clutches (wear and tear) battled it out with Volvo customer services still got nowhere.

We are now 4 months down the line and guess what........ the clutch pedal is getting stuck half way it is not releasing properly.

Volvo assist are due to look at the vehicle I reckon it will get taken away again....... will issue a further update once I know more.

Looking across a few forums I can see that the clutches are going on these XC40's at a low mileage and this is not an isolated incident.

EDIT: and regarding the changing of gears the explanation I received was that the gears were not actually changing it was the digital dashboard malfunctioning s***ing itself was the term used.

Rather frightningly, with the new and ‘improved’ Dual mass flywheels that’s very much going rate, in fact I wouldn’t be suprised if Volvo had sdiscounted that.

That’s why I drive 2 vehicles with 1 an auto and the other single mass flywheel.

How much is a dual mass clutch assembly these days? That an outrageous amount of money for a clutch replacement.
