RE: fuel consumption
The 1.6 delivers around 38-40mpg with normal driving. Motorway speeds will make it drop to around 35-36mpg as will driving with air-conditioning on.
The rear tyres will last for ages - I clocked 40,000+ miles on my last set of rear tyres (Michelin). That figure is genuine. The front tyres should give you 12-15,000 miles. Tyre wear is influenced (here goes) by driving style, tread compound, tyre pressure etc etc, as you know. Prior to the V40 1.6 petrol I had an early V40 1.9TD (Renault based engine). This gave around 45mpg with mixed driving. I found front tyre wear to be much worse - presumably because of the extra torque and weight of the engine. The 1.9TD models have good torque and are smooth to drive, if a little noisy at low speed - comfy cruisers though - relaxed driving style. I'm not familiar with the later common rail injection engines. These will most likely be more efficient and refined. The 1.6 petrol feels nicer to drive through twisty roads (in my opinion), lighter front end. It revs at about 3500 at 70mph, perhaps a little noisy at motorway speeds. It's not an all out speed machine - it was never intended for that, but you won't be disappointed with it. Economical, reliable, etc. As far as servicing goes - I think the 1.6 is probably cheaper, Volvo dealers have service price lists - worth comparing the models. I used to do a 5000 mile oil change between the 10,000 intervals specified by Volvo on the TD, primarily to keep good clean oil circulating at the Garrett turbo. I haven't driven a 1.8 or 2.0 litre for any great length of time so can't compare it with the others. |
