I will be attempting this pretty soon, wanna do it before winter (16 mths/20k miles since last replacement) but a good tip for ribs and knee protection is to use a fluffy bathroom carpet and spongy dog training pad (for kneeling). Did help last time, will apply the same again

ah see i used a gardening kneeling pad not a dog one,, hence knee going off the edge and finding the One pointy stone on the slabbed front drive,,,,
i suppose i Could get some fat on me to help with the bruised ribs ,,if the trade off from being a skinny boooger to a UFB doesnt hinder the jamming into the footwell half upside down.....or im getting one of ,,

and cutting the arms off....

Well I can now say I've joined the ranks of the pollen filter changers as I've just done it!

Took me quite a while and was a right PITA but I think it's only because I was seeing what I could get away with and thought I had an extension bar for the right wrench when it turned out I didn't so I managed to get the 13mm CEM bracket bolts off with a ring spanner! - Don't ask me how..

The old filter wasn't even that dirty which made the whole operation feel somewhat pointless, I also thought I'd placed back the rubber mounts behind the bracket bolts properly but then found out (once I've done it all back up) that it had slipped down so it's currently not installed but seems fine??

My plan is to get the right extension bar so I can get the CEM bracket bolts off easily, reattach the rubber mount and clean out the CEM while I'm at it as a bit of maintenance at some point.

I also noticed that the removed Volvo filter had sponges stuck to both sides of it whereas the Bosch replacement did not..

Here's what I did:
  • Disconnected the battery
  • Started off lowering the CEM, getting it off of its bracket and pulling the carpet down
  • Started having a go at the bolts with the ring spanner, realised it was very difficult and decided to disconnect the CEM to free up some space
  • Start undoing the CEM connections, took a while to work out the funky connectors
  • I then realised there were connectors at the bottom which were now too awkward to get off as the CEM was almost hanging loose
  • Left on the bottom CEM connections and gave me enough room to do the rest

Here's what I'd do next time:
  • Disconnect the battery
  • Disconnect the bottom CEM connections
  • Lower the CEM, get it off of its bracket and pull the carpet down
  • Disconnect the top CEM connections
  • Move the CEM out of the way
  • Use an extension bar to get off the CEM bracket bolts
  • Replace pollen filter
  • Put back together

Well done and welcome to the club.

Rather than disconnecting the battery and taking all the plugs out of the CEM, I would advise you invest in a flexible ratchet head spanner [13mm].

That way you only need to pull the carpet down a bit so the CEM can be pushed that little bit further down.

You can then gain good access to the bolts with the ratchet spanner, remove the bracket and CEM all at once to gain access to the filter door.

Yes, the Bosch filter I got also didn't have the black sponge on the ends like the OE one did.

Thanks to all the posters its been a lot of help.

Changed mine on my "new" 2008 V50 today. Took me about 2 hours including rain and tea breaks. Looks like it either hadn't been done ever or at least not very recent. The change in the amount of airflow coming through the vents is dramatic.

When (if) i do it again, this is how i did it.

Disconnect the battery as precaution but as not unplugging CEM up to you.
Remove panel behind waterfall console.
Remove glove box (labelling the wires)
Remove inner glovebox
Lower the CEM, get it off of its bracket and pull the carpet down
Move the CEM out of the way as far as possible
Use a angled ratchet spanner and a hand finger ratchet with 13mm socket to remove the CEM bracket bolts
Replace pollen filter hoovering out its recess and the carpet.
Put back together
Go find Savalon and treat all cuts and scrapes

Whilst i had the glovebox out i cleaned the air temp sensor and changed the glovebox & footwell lights for LED so a bit of a bonus.

I did mine yesterday for the first time under my ownership. It took about 40 minutes all in.

- Prepare swear jar
- Remove strut brace
- Disconnect battery
- Remove carpet flap over CEM (2 push screws)
- Disconnect CEM
- Remove CEM bracket
- Remove floor mat and pull back passenger carpet a bit
- Unscrew and replace filter
- Clean up CEM pins with IPA and old toothbrush (may as well while you're there)

Reassemble

...And now there's enough in the swear jar to pay the dealer to do it next time

wait, what??
why? am I missing something?...:>

btw I seem to noticed 2 general ways to approach this - glovebox out&CEM not disconnected, or CEM out & glovebox stays.
I personally did the latter one twice, seem more sensible (possiblity to examine/check CEM while doing so VS bending wires and connectors) but maybe glovebox method has its advantages, may try it one day (hopefully not soon).
