Hi,
Yes, stethoscope is always a great way of tracking noises. I have had pretty good results using a piece of garden hose. It is surprisingly effective with the open end placed firmly on a part with the other end up to your ear. Ampy. |

Thank you all for your valuable comments. Sorry for not replying sooner but I have been away on a job.
Although I have received suggestions such as ruined VVT-gear or ruined ABS-pump, I believe you are right guys as I can localize the noise somewhere between left front wheel and the bulkhead and this is exactly the area where the starter is installed (under the air filter box). I will check the starter with a stethoscope as well before I remove it. Then I'll decide what to do next i. e. clean the starter and reinstall it or install an used one. I certainly will let you know what I found. Many thanks again to all of you! Last edited by Crixus; Sep 17th, 2018 at 18:37. |

Tannaton through PM`s, has while not directly saying it and not being able to defend his position on Bendix drive, realizes the starter has a Bendix.

Hello,
I have now removed the starter, taken it to pieces, cleaned it and lubricated it. I have run it on bench and it seems to work just fine but the issue in terms of a rattling noise remains. See below the starter running on bench (1) and the rattling noise at cold start (2). (1) Starter running on bench: https://youtu.be/joPuXmfjgKM (2) Rattling noise: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aX1jngcvKN0 Can it still be the starter or is it something else? Any ideas? Starter seems perfect. When you rev the engine does that noise change? Sounds like a serpentine belt pulley bearing going out. My V8 has started making a similar noise since the temp outside is cooler and it`s a belt pulley

Before you go any distance I would check the timing belt etc as that could destroy your engine . Can you detect what area of the engine it's coming from?
