Mine has a tendency to do something similar! But only when the outside temp has fallen to near 0 degC.

Otherwise the heating works fine - the engine temp gauge rises to a normal level and the heaters blow warm air when required.

However, if outside temperature gets near zero it does a strange thing where the air blows warm for a few seconds then gives some cold air and repeats like this.

I mentioned it at the first service at the Volvo dealer when it was still under warranty (I think I read somewhere that it was a software issue?), but they told me all they could do was "recalibrate" the aircon system and it wouldn't be covered by the warranty. I should have pushed it, but just left it. It's not a major issue for me bacause it's rarely that cold on the South Coast. May be a different issue to yours...

Yes, mine did the same last winter when the temperature fell well below freezing. I took it back to Volvo a couple of times but they never admitted to finding anything wrong - it seems OK though this year.

The XC90 must be the most un-reliable car going - since buying it I have had just about everything go wrong; yaw sensor; splined sleeve; haldex unit failure; alternator; MAF flap

Luckily, everything was sorted out under warranty... which ran out 2 weeks ago.

Fingers crossed it continues to remain 'perfect' as it really was fantastic in the recent snow and the kids love it!!

Theoldfm: have you tried VW turbos. Renault electrics or Ford...erm most bits for reliability?

Try going back to basics. Is there an air lock in the coolant and/or is the thermostat opening/stuck.
