Xc90 diesel auto
I'm looking to purchase an auto d5. But I'm a bit put off on the autobox failures . I don't really want to buy a manual . But I would be livid if the box went and I had a bill for 5k .can someone give me a little guidance thanks in advance.

Shouldn't cause any problems with regular oil changes and normal driving/no towing.

The major achilles heal of the manual car is you have FOUR foot pedals. The reason is the parking brake is not on top of the console between the two seats, but above the clutch pedal. This I would imagine would make towing and creeping up/down hills in hilly districts no joke at all.
Best stick to auto and let the box take the strain. |

But before you buy , dip the auto box oil , if the colour of the oil bears no resemblance to any shade of red then it will need changing , it is likely to cost the other side of £150 . ALSO get the latest gearbox software upgrade and you should be ok as long at it shows no problems when driving AFTER it has thouroughly warmed up . ON the other hand a manual is quite pleasant to drive , you soon grow a third leg for the parking brake ( if it works that is ! ) that goes for the auto too , Test the parking brake , press it when doing 10 mph see how much retardation you get , nil could mean a £300 bill for rear brake overhaul .. Thirdly make sure the rear wheel drive works ....

[QUOTE=Clan;1091474]. ALSO get the latest gearbox software upgrade
My 54 plate 96k is going fine, but has not been near a Volvo dealer for software upgrades for probably 5 years - am I missing a trick? Heard they were doing them with services now - so may be tempted at next interval if I thought it would make any difference. |

Its worth getting done , they have revised the way the gearbox works and also increased oil pressures to clamp the clutches and lock up clutch tighter to compensate for wear and a host of other things i daresay .. The software updates included on the service are probably worth over £100 on their own .
