Great info guys; found this thread after having worked out how to open my closed bonnet by barging in through the grill and taking the bolts of the lock mechanism off. Now it's time to replace the broken bonnet release cable.

Probably a dumb question, but for those who used a bicycle gear cable, does the cable have the end nipple attached when you are threading it through the sheath or does the nipple need to be added once you have the thinner cable through at the bonnet lock mechanism end?

I will be looking to buy such a cable this week and just want to check what I'm needing to get.

Not sure I quite follow your question, but when I did this, the bike cable had the grommet on one end. I threaded from the cabin end and slotted the grommet into the release handle. I then cannibalised an old 13 amp plug and used the wire connection for the fuse holder to grip the cable at the release mechanism end.

Since I was then putting on a new grill, I looped the old cable round the release mechanism and left it hanging, so that if the bike cable goes, I still have an emergency back-up release that can be operated by fishing up behind the bumper. (Actually, I formed a loop through a length of old garden hose as pulling on just the wire risks cutting through hands).

Grommet?! Sorry, I must have been tired when I wrote this last night! I don't know what the correct name for the welded knob on the end of the cable is, but it is most certainly not a grommet!

Thanks Worms. I like the idea of attaching a failsafe mechanism too, should it go again.

Grommet, Nipple => thingy :-)
