I've just brimmed mine and it's showing 730 miles on the computer.
I'm taking it from Kent to Scotland in a couple of weeks, I'll drive through the night so I'll have the cruise on at 75/80. as a new owner I'm intrigued to see how she'll do! |

That estimate depends on the average mpg computed by the car. In other words, if I go ahead and reset the average mpg value, then drive the car for 5 minutes at 60kmh where the car gets an average of 70mpg, then well a full tank of 70L (18.5gal) will give an estimate range of 1300 miles. But that would be IF you are going to drive it at 60kmh. This way, I can show you maybe 1500 miles to empty tank on my 2.4 non turbo petrol. But that would be after doing the trick above with the car at 40kmh or so.

2006 XC70 d5 auto
Average over last 9,000 miles is 34.6mpg with a best tank of 38.8 and worst of 30.2(!) I usually fill up after 500 miles and a bit and put just over 60 liters in. Mixed driving, but commuting into Leeds is very poor. A roads and motorway ok. The best tank was in Europe and included a fastish run on the unrestricted autobahn in Germany. Would be nice to know how to get some of the numbers here mind? |

2005 S60 D5 185 Euro 4 Manual
I drove from Maidstone in Kent to Glencoe in Scotland on Friday night. I brimmed the tank with 67 litres and reset all the trips. The range showed 735 miles but of course this was based on my previous usage so didn't really count. I set my cruise at 80mph indicated (77mph actual) Two of us in the car (plus the dog) and the boot absolutely full to the brim. We did 603 miles, about 500 of which were motorway cruising. The rest 40/50/60 on Scottish A roads north of Glasgow. Here were my readings when we arrived in Glencoe ... IMG_9448 by tunneruk, on Flickr IMG_9447 by tunneruk, on Flickr IMG_9445 by tunneruk, on Flickr IMG_9446 by tunneruk, on Flickr This in theory gives me a tank range of 800 miles under these conditions. I will set the cruise to an actual 70mph on the way back and see how difference it makes, I'm betting on 3-4 MPG extra. Last edited by Tunneruk; Sep 9th, 2018 at 10:57. |

Nice, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at the difference travelling on cruise at an actual 70 will make... For a lot of the time our instantaneous hangs around 99.9mpg and doesn't drop much below 70 even with moderate motorway hills/weather conditions.
If you were to take the extra 30 or so minute travel time hit over 600 miles, and drop back to actual 65mph on cruise I'd bet your average mpg would get into the low-mid 60's. Which for a well laden Euro 4 S60 I'd say isn't half bad.

Yep that's kind of what I'd expect given what I've noted from the instant readout on our S80. These engines seem to be in their most efficient range between 55-65mph with only a slight drop between there & 75ish.

Mixed driving, bit round town, but mostly B road commute (c50mph) I get 37mpg, which is about 550 to a tank. I usually need to fill up after 500 miles at which point there is only usually 3-4 litres left.
Best I've got is 580miles I think and that took 71 litres when I then refilled! Euro 4 V70 Auto.... my Euro 3 manual was a completely different story... more like 700+... I do miss that! |

I had a 2003 D5 run out of fuel with 30miles left on the trip computer. The engine shut down when I was in lane 3 of the M6 north of Crewe. Proper brown trouser moment as I cut across 3 lanes to the hard shoulder with my foot in the clutch and no engine......
Be very cautious when eeking the last from the tank. I was merely trying to avoid motorway fuel prices! Charles |
