Default 2002 V40 automatic gearbox suddenly stopped working

This is my mother's car, 140 000 miles. She said that without warning nor issues in the past couple weeks, she heard a cracking noise when she put the car into drive going out of a parking lot after going to the movies. I had a look at it and it starts like normal, then in neutral it barely made any noise, but upon shifting in other gears I heard the cracking noise then I hear something spinning , like a spinning sprocket without resistance . Same noise in all gears I would say and the car won't budge. After that it made noise even in neutral. This car ran flawlessly, I am hoping it's not the end of it. My father probably kind of mistreated the engine, not waiting for temp to rise, shifting at rather high rpm (like 3-4000), but he used it only occasionally. What could it be ? Hoping it's not the most serious of all gearbox breakdowns, I thought it was good for another 20 000 miles or more.

If you're lucky, it may just be a CV joint that's broken up,... but then again, that wouldn't explain why there's a noise in neutral ?

it sounds like the torque converter has failed. there are no quick fixes.
