I use a Volvo specific obd2 reader to monitor the temperature:

http://www.scantool-direct.co.uk/ica...tool-i906.html

It's a pretty good bit of kit, it won't read engine codes on the V70, the diesels are notoriously difficult to read, but it will reset engine codes, read and reset error codes from the other modules (SRS, gearbox etc) and it will show live data from all the modules as well. The auto has a temperature sensor built in so I just get the live data from the gearbox module. It's a nice handheld unit and I have a holder for it in the car so I can just set it up and keep an eye on it all the time during the journey.
Thank you for that information Mike. Mod you know if the gearbox temperature sensor is of the variable resistance variety and could therefore be used as a sender for a conventional gauge?

I intend to fit a gauge to mine shortly but if I can utilise a sender that's already there and suitable for the job then all the better. If not I'll obtain a sender housing which interrupts one of the ATF hoses.

I'm not sure I'm afraid, but if you want to fit a dedicated gauge I would probably install another sensor in the hose as you have said, if you start interfering with the existing sensor something could go wrong and make the gearbox module think something is wrong.

Should be easy enough to fit one in one of the hoses I would have thought.

Having said that though, realistically how often are you going to need to know the temperature of the gearbox oil? The only time it's ever really needed is when you're towing, for normal driving it will never get to the point that you need to keep an eye on it. For the time and effort involved in fitting the temperature gauge I think you'd be much better off getting an OBD2 reader that will show live data and just have it connected when you're towing.

I wrote an update to this thread back on 27th July when we arrived at the campsite, I've only just realised that it didn't post! I was using mobile data rather than wifi so I guess the signal cut out at the critical moment!

Anyway, the oil cooler was a great success. As I said before, the temperature reached 117 degrees very quickly on my towing test run without a cooler fitted and would have risen further if we hadn't reached the campsite. With the cooler fitted it stayed at a steady 67 degrees on the flat and only went up a few degrees on a hill if I was using a steady throttle position to keep the revs at 1900 in top gear for maximum torque (just under 60 mph). If I was pushing it on a hill it would go up and there was one occasion where I had to accelerate hard and it peaked at 101 for a few seconds, but it very quickly dropped back down to 67 at the top of the hill and 101 degrees is still a safe temperature.

So all in all I'm really happy that I took the time to fit the additional cooler and really impressed with the difference it actually makes. If anyone is reading this in two minds whether to fit one or not they are definitely worth it and keeping the oil temperature down will really help the life of the oil and therefore the gearbox.

I've written a thread which in tandem with this one should help many of you.

WARNING: Just don't follow this man's choices on fluids. See below

I can evidence the heat issue, as can any breakers yard - these transmissions are all slowly overheating, towing or not. These things need a cooler, especially 2001-2003 autos.

I am sorry to say there is a helluva lot of utter, utter hogwash written on Volvo transmissions, re the ATF changes, which ATF and the need (or not) for a cooler. It never ceases. I am sorry, those subsribing to the Volvo mantra will disagree with all I've written.

And the guy that says he's done 250,000 on the same ATF will be along in a mo' (because it is possible). However, when i dropped the sumps to get my hoses from the scrappers for this project, all had black ATF. They all run hot.

Y'onour... I rest my case.

NOTE: As long as you don't use the wrong fluid as MikeS100 pics show him [Post 35]. 'Carlube MVATF Plus' should not be near his box.

If you going to use a Carlube product it should be:

CARLUBE ATF-U
Or anything Toyota JWS3309 / Toyota T-IV (both are the same)

'Carlube MVATF Plus' might well be exactly suitable in an 850 (check), and you might jsut get away with it in a V70, but it'll have the wrong friction-modifiers for a 5 speed box, and will have a differnet temperature/viscosity/friction index. [MikeS100??? suggest you flush it now] CARLUBE ATF-U or see your Toyota Dealer for the right stuff.

Never, ever leave ATF and oil choices to car acessory-shop parts lists without double-verification. See more on ATF in my post.

Might want to check your facts before you start saying people have done it wrong. The fluid I used is fine in the 4 speed box, the fluid you are referring to is for the 5 speed.

In which case, egg-on-face for me. I have your sig as "1999 V70 TDi (auto) - 2002 C70 T5 GT Convertible (manual) ' and thus your 'ovlov' as a 1999 V70. I had it that all these had 5 speed boxes, or perhaps you have other cars. or perhaps not. Either way, apologies. You choice of fluid in a 4 speed box is indeed fine.

No worries. I think you might be getting confused with what gearbox is fitted to what car. My signature is correct, I have a 1999 V70 TDi auto but this is fitted with the 4 speed box and so takes the fluid I have used. There are also V70's fitted with the 5 speed box, it's just a case or checking what gearbox you have before you go out to buy the fluid.

Completely agree that if you used this fluid in a 5 speed box you would be doing damage.

A local autobox specialist I took mine to initially for his opinions said my '99 had a 5 speed box and that I was wrong saying 4 speed.

'Done several V70's - they're all 5 speed'.

Needless to say this numpty's opinions didn't count for that much afterwards.

Dex 3 OK for 4 speed as noted in my 1999 V70 OEM drivers handbook.

Specialist told me I'd been using the wrong ATF.

Maybe he thought I was a numpty and would take his 'expert' opinion as gospel, give him the job and pay him the £800 quoted just for removing and refitting the box plus whatever extra considerable costs for working on it.

OK, a 4 speed V70, I would have told you, no such animal. Clearly wrong. I sent you a PM to warn you of a folly you had not made.

I am no longer amazed by how much bullplop comes from 'specialists' & 'experts'. I am at the point where before I engage with anybody professing to know more than me, i find myself checking. No matter what the service or item, more often than not, it pays off.

Some might call this cynicism. I call it 'statistical-certainty'.
