Default Help! V70 D5 in Southampton , diesel leak near tank

lent my 2002 v70 to a friend who has a a terrible family emergency so she could drive to southampton, then dorset, and she has filled the tank and says it is leaking . Car is in Southampton, anyone mechanical on here nearby that is reading this and could look today, or any idea what could be wrong with it?
needs this fixed asap so any help would be awseome.

I've only ever had about 50 quid in the car (2/3rds tank?) so im guessing its a problem in the top half of tank

Thanks

Will

Just wonder if there is a problem with the filler neck where that attaches to the tank. Might not actually be the tank!

I wondered that but didn;t know how high up the tank that pipe is, also searching around a couple of people seem to have had problems with the seal on the top of the tank where the pump etc fit, (access under rear seat) sometimes needing the ring tightening up it seems.

usually the problem is the car has been filled with petrol and the tank sender has been removed on the n/s to drain of and the seal has not been replaced and there has been grit when refitting the sender to the tank.

have you had the car long and has it been filled since you have had it ?

Thanks. Just got car back, have taken off the inspection lid and there is lots of dirt and diesel around the top of the sender. The retaining ring is all mangled up where someone has been tightening it up with chisels/ drifts etc

With some struggling and an extra pair of hands I managed to undo this ring and have taken the sender out and we have ordered a new ring (only about £7 thank God) and new seal (about £12) .

Quick question, is there any markings for the correct orientation of the sender unit , as I can't see a locating slot/tab/pin and can't see any arrow marks etc.

There seem to be a bunch of pipes that clip to the bottom of it too, which seems strange, why would they go over to this side of the tank if they are to do with the fuel pump?

I am going to carefully try and clean all the grit and muck out of the threads and O-ring groove without getting the muck in the tank and wait for my ring to arrive later today.

Thanks GD for offer of help, hopefully can manage with some guidance on here and its a bit of a trek for you.

there should be very faint arrow marks on the sender and tank so the sender is aligned.

the pipes are allow fuel to both sides of the tank as its a saddle tank.

Ah thanks, did find an arrow after i cleaned the top a bit , that faces to front of car?

Seems to be some kind of clip to hold pipes to the bottom of the sender also.

Heres a pic anyway of what I'm doing
