Depends really how much "oomph" you want under your right foot!

Personally I'd never go for a 2.0 non turbo or 2.4 diesel non turbo! 2.3 non turbo is quicker thqn you would expect with a manual box - the older k-jet injection much better then the modern LH if you ask me. Felt much quicker and trouble free.

Diesel is an acquired taste and can apparently be much more tempramental an engine!

Engines: Having had several 700's, from 2.0 to V6, I like the 2.3 LPT in my current 940. Good low range power, and cruises well enough on the motorway. It does lack a bit of umph in the 50-70 range thou. I think the best for (petrol) fuel economy - 24-31mpg is my range.

Just a note on diesel versions, whether they are better or worse may be immaterial - just try finding one!!!! They do turn up from time to time, but really quite rare, and generally cost a great deal more than a better equiped petrol version. Even with better fuel economy it would take you a while to get the difference back I think.

Interesting comments about keeping out of the turbo boost rev range, so how do you tell what revs it cuts in at?
I have a 97 940 celebration and driven at below 2500 revs on long journeys doesn't seem to get better than 28 mpg.

Fit a boost gauge?

On a D24TIC you know when it kicks in because you hear the whistle and also it kicks in quite violently as nothing much happens before then lol!

I run a 940 diesel estate (intercooler version) 1993 ,& get approx. 31m.p.g around town and approx. 37m.p.g. on a motorway run ( and that is fully loaded withj 2 x adults and 2 x children + associated luggage without a roof box etc. ). so running a diesel even with the difference in price p/ltr. between petrol and diesel, it is still cheaper to run.

A 940 turbo (petrol) is the last car you will ever need :-)

The ones that say turbo on the back are the HPTs and come with a boost gauge. Its not so much rpm related as power related.

I have an mpg meter and can get 40mpg using hypermiling techniques. Otherwise I get 24mpg if I enjoy it.

I don't see why a k-jet would be better, LHs still over fuel a lot. Fuel systems do not make much difference to driving experience, its probably more likely other characteristic like CAM or CR are responsible.

Hi,

Who care about MPG! They are far too much fun to drive to miss the opportunity.

As I said in some other topic of the same ilk, if you have to talk about mpg, you are looking at the wrong car - leave it to someone who'll drive it as it deserves!

Des. . .

PS: Holy Thread Resurrection!!!

Hi

I can confirm that not all that are marked turbo on the back and have a dashboard boost gauge are HPTs.
This has been a long time myth.
My last 940 was a 2.0litre turbo (which is a LPT) which had a boost gauge and the badge on the rear and I had pictures of when the car was new so was original.
Also my previous to this 940 was a wentworth which also had the 2.0litre LPT with boost gauge but this did not have a turbo badge just a wentworth badge.
I guess it was just what badges Volvo had lying about and how they felt at the time.

As for the 2.0litre LPTs they probably averaged about 26mpg (In the real world) minimum was 21mpg and max 35 mpg.

Owning one of these cars is not about how economic they are but the longevity and reliability.
If you are looking for economy go buy a Peugeot/VW Diesel car.

I replaced my 940 with a petrol 2.4litre V70 and although a lot more economical (Averaging 33mpg and max 46mpg) even three years later I still miss the 940 as it felt like you were driving a lump of granite.

As for the Diesel 940s (VW engine) I had a friend with a turbo diesel which he says averaged about 30mpg and maxed at 37mpg but smoked like a tyre fire on a cold start and was very noisy compared to the petrol versions. Also when the diesel engine went wrong (and it does) it cost a lot more to fix than the petrol engines and kind of wiped out all the savings on fuel economy.
