Mine with a standard 2.0 litre non-turbo:

26-27 mpg general motoring, 32-33 on a long motorway cruise.

You can get a petrol one and have a lpg kit fitted then on average on price you would get 40+ mpg money wise that is I've got all my volvos on lpg and would not run one on only petrol now

If you are looking for economy go buy a Peugeot/VW Diesel car.
I went from a modern Peugeot Diesel (1.6 , 110BHP DV6 engine in a 307sw) to a 940.......in short the 940 is cheaper to run on aggregate, spends more time on the road, less time in the garage, fewer parts/things go wrong. I can generally fix it myself if it does go wrong and in general it's better built. Overall the 940 is simply less hassle.

Hope this helps?

I just got a legit 36 mpg (45.45 litres, 360 miles), most of it was on cruise control at 56-62 mph, right around 2100-2300 rpm.
Only hit 110 mph once this time.

Been experimenting with this restricted intake. It's a bit heavy, might use a bungee cord or something.

Default Volvo 940 2.3l LPT, 740 5 cylincer diesel

I am very pleased, just got a Volvo 940 from 1997/8 (over 200 000miles)with the 2.3l LPT, got 35mpg/8.3l/100km driving mixed, motorway (60-65mph) and downtown Manchester, I was gliding it slowly, so not a bad results at all.
Had the 740 in the past with the VW 5 cylinder turbodiesel, that got 38mpg/7.4l/100km all the time, not matter how I drove it, and I was doing always 105mph on the motorway (Germany) and a lot of downtown driving, on the UK motorways (relaxed driving and within the legal limits) it went to about 7l 100km (or 40 UK/imperial gallons mpgs).
Unfortunately the diesel blew up on me (or my wifey) as she abused it all the time (low revs driving up steep hils and 500 yard journeys....) I would say both cars are about equal in acceleration, but the diesel felt more nimble, well the 940 is automatic and the 740 was stick.....

I'm getting 30mpg mixed driving and 36-38 mpg open road, all checked brim to brim. 2.3 lpt with really low miles, rising daily!

I've had my 760 TD auto 6 months now but it's taken me this long to be in a position to be able to quote meaningful figures as I only use it at weekends at the moment. Average is 35-40 mpg depending on mix. Worst was 30 from short trips around town. Best has been 45 on a long and gentle cruise (50-70 mph)

My d24 940 gets between 34 and 38mpg, this translates to between 420 and 480 miles per tank. this is 150 miles every day, 135miles motorway at 75mph or so and 15 miles of city and B roads....
And i usually floor it away from most roundabouts... especially in the wet. know, because hard spots on tires are dangerous....

I have managed 47mpg when i followed trucks to and from work for a tank... that was boring!
