Well I jacked the back of the spares car up and whatever I did the wheel on the other side rotated in the opposite direction.
It's safe to say that the axle which is marked 1031 has a standard diff in it, which I suspected. |

So is my spares car the only one with a locker so far? I'm determined to get the diff off when it goes to the crusher!

Any stickers/numbers on the axle tubes? Mine didn't have a "1041" tag, but gave a Volvo number, which Vadis confirmed to be a 1041.

Yes both cars have the stickers just inboard of the trailing arm on the passenger side. Both are marked 1031 one being 3.54 and the other 3.91. with this info it suggests that it isn't anything special.
I might take the rear cover off of it to fit a new gasket so I can check for certain then. |

Spreadsheet.
I found my spreadsheet that identifies mph/1000 rpm and stuff like that. It doesn't cover teh M90 boxes that have different overdrive ratios but if I can put the spreadsheet up it shouldn't be hard to add some more cells.
So how do I put a spreadsheet up here? |

Good question I don't know though. All of the pitures etc I put on here are on Photobucket. I saved a message I wrote on here as a word document including the pictures so maybe you could do it the other way , just copy and paste it.

My 760 D24Tic auto is 3:73 but with the manual gearbox with OD its 3:54
I have all the ratios in my book 'The Manual Automobile, Encyclopedia of Every Car in the World - Quattroruote', but it only goes up to the end of the 700 series in Volvos, I'll check it against the lists given here another time, off to bed now!

Thought
Staring at the owners handbooks I have here, it would seem that as far as 9 series cars go, only the B230FK ones had 3.31s and that all other 3.31s are ONLY in 7s (and maybe some 2s) - but which 7s is harder.

Spreadsheet computing gear ratios
The most interesting figures are RPM at 70 mph. Do feel free to check my computations.
It shouldn't be hard to add the figures for the various M90s (I think there are at least three with different overdrive ratios in 5th gear on 9 series redblocks). It may be worth mentioning that those various M90s have differing first and second gear ratios - and I've just made a slight blooper in agreeing to buy one from a B230FK which has a very low first and second (to go I suppose with the high 3.31 final drive which SHOULD be 3.31 but MIGHT be 3.54 in the estates) so is likely to be wheelspin city with a hairy engine. The 1996 owner's handbook does not give MPH/1000 RPM in 5th - but the 1987 one give 28 in 5th on a 3.31, 24 in O/D on a 3.54 and 25 3.73 in O/D on a 3.73 which seems necessarily to imply that up to 1987 only cars with M47s had a 3.31, and that the 3.73 came with the AW70/71 autobox which had an ultra-high 0.69 overdrive fourth (but to ignore the ZFautobox). The 1990 handbook adds the 4.1 rear end with 21 mph/1000rpm. These do not quite tally with the spreadsheet figure but you canna change the laws of physics Jim. Moreover they imply that my B234F with M46 and 3.31 does not exist. Oh yes it does! More detectiving required - but so far it looks like for a 3.31 you are looking for either a car with an M47 or a B230FK! |
