I know but you have to give them the benefit of doubt.

I agree, cars are funny things and dealers are probably the same! But the relationship with the local dealer is important and I think it's important not to shred it.

A balance needs to be struck and, if the dealer is top-drawer, the dealer will get to know the customer and his/her needs / preferred way of communicating. In my case, I like to know the technical detail of what's happening and, more often than not, the local dealer obliges.

Car into dealer today for 1 st service and EGR/cooler fault.

Replaced the cooler but not EGR as this component wasn't damaged. Appears that the area wasn't as gunked-up as much as some they have had. Think it's the faulty cooler that causes the EGR to fail due to the ingress of moisture which ultimately causes the build-up that impedes the movement of the valve. Mine obviously not as damaged as some which is probably why no engine warning lights appeared and the tortoise has only visited briefly twice (and once when the engine was off but ignition on).

During the service there was an engine management software upgrade which should improve some aspects of efficiency (hopefully better MPG). Also performed a forced regeneration as there was some build up of soot but again not as bad as some cars they have had. Seems they just plug into the Volvo software which increases the engine revs to force the regeneration which only took about 10 mins. Busts the myth then that you need to be driving at high revs to make it work ordinarily.

Also provided with a complementary 1L container of the special Castrol Edge Professional engine oil - very nice. And all done and dusted before 4.30 pm.

Altogether happy and did enjoy the day with a 64 plate V40 courtesy car - although the auto box (think 6 speed) not as smooth as the XC60 eight speed box.............but the MPG figures are something I could get used to.....over 58 MPG for the short time I had it.

Have to agree on the V40 - I had a (manual) SE Lux and it was a very pleasant way to get around. Would go for the R Design if I was getting one of my own, but if I fancy a change I just borrow Mrs McP's now!

Was it a D2? That has a DSG gearbox and it isn't quite as smooth as the Geartronic the D3 and D4 have.

Hi craig

I bought my car new last July and it has been back to dealership five times for repair re this same fault. The first time was three months after I bought it .In Dec 2014 had a once and all fix as per Volvo instructions, however last week back in again. The garage have replaced the unit again. I have been told that there is an issue between the software and the unit which can cause sudden loss of power as happened to me on A1M. Thankfully late at night and little traffic about. I am currently waiting to hear from Volvo as I have made formal complaint. The car has now done 12,100 miles.

It was a D2 (1500cc) rather nice and quite quick. Had 6 speed auto and lots of MPG!
