You need to remove the rods, preferably while holding the catch back into place.

From memory, the rods either pull off, or have little clips you rotate before pulling the rod off.

Something a bit like this, but from memory mine were metal:

The rods are what connect the tailgate catch to the handles, so make sure you remember the orientation of them for re-assembly

What Jim said ^^^^^ - a useful tip to help remember where the rods went is get your phone camera and hold it inside the tailgate and take a series of shots that you can refer to later to see where the rods link to.

Also once you've got it all disconnected and the latch out (the latch being the item you pictured in your post), check that when you squeeze the handle on the tailgate to "open" the tailgate, the relevant rod moves and springs back easily when the handle is released.

Take the opportunity to lube the various parts of the linkage that you wouldn't normally get to see as well!

This is why I said you may need to remove the door card to get access to remove the rods. They should just pop out.

Great work! Have you worked out why the original wasn't working? If it just needs a lube and a bit of exercise, you've then got a useful spare!
