Any thought on this one:-

I have a nasty knock when pulling off and driving at low speeds. It sounds as if it's coming from the front N/S but also sounds as if it may be coming from the back - althought that may well be sound being carried. It's constantly there but my shocks etc seem fine.

Now then, when I bounce the front end up and down a few times I cannot hear the said noise, but when i move the car from side to side I can hear it quite clearly somewhere in the N/s front compartment area. I then jacked up the front n/s wheel and low and behold when i rocked it from side to side the noise was NOT there. When I lowered it again - it returned!

I'm no mech - what would this possibly be a symptom of?

By the way - is it correct that my dash clock and mileometer still shows when ignition is turned off??

Default RE: Knocking V40

A few things spring to mind here.

A knock when pulling off is usually the top right engine mount on these cars, but if you can hear the noise when you rock the car then this might not be the problem.

Another common fault is the front anti-rollbar bushes. If you remove the front wheel you can follow the roll bar and just see the rubber bushes. You should be able to check for play by levering the rollbar up and down.

It could be other things, but I'd check these first.

Colin.

PS. My clock and milage is displayed all the time

Default Newbie with a old problem....

Hi,
I'm a newbie and just joined.
I have a P reg. Volvo V40 and can hear the same sound as in this thread when I go slowely over bumps. Sounds like I have the same problem.
Has anyone got any idea what cost I'm looking at to replace the anti roll bar bushes?
Thanks

Default Many thanks!

Hi Morphinemitt

Great help! Many thanks for that. I'll get underneath and look this weekend, (the other half is used to seeing me on my knees!)

Thanks again.

Gary
