No traction on front left wheel
Hi all, after a bit of advice...
I have a 2010 r design and before Xmas notices that the front left wheel was not getting traction when going up a ramp in a carpark, the wheel was slipping. It went into Volvo to be checked out today... They say they couldn't find an issue with the car, but noticed the front left tyre was at 3mm and the front right and rears were at 5mm indicating an issue. They suggesting that the alignment / geo is out and have booked the car in again to get done. Is this plausible? Anyone have any ideas what the issue could be? |

The fronts will spin when you have the wheels turned. You will notice the traction control light flashing on the dash. The way that dtcs works is that the wheel will spin but the system use the brake to try and hold that wheel and thus send the power to the wheels with grip.
Do you use this car park all the time? |

Hi Owen,
No, it was a new carpark to me- i didn't notice any lights flashing, tat could be with me not wanting to roll to the car behind me. It also seems to happen when straight on incline (my drive), I don't know if it's down to having different tread depths on the front tyres... As the left has worn more than the right! I don't want to replace the fronts until the problems rectified but may swap the fronts and get it aligned and keep an eye on the left tyre wear rate. Would the alignment cause more wear on a tyre- its even wear too. |

Wheelspin should be detected by the ABS sensor and in turn DTC should try to brake that wheel and send a signal to engage the rears. It sounds to me that there could be a problem with either of those systems.
If you want to test yourself I would suggest to go to a wet or muddy field and see if there is any drive to the rear wheels. Most tyres are directional which means that you cannot swap left with right if that's the case, only front & back. Only option then would be to get the tyres removed from the rim and fitted in the correct running direction

I also hv a 2010 R-Design with 17k miles and was serviced just b4 xmas. Front near side front 3-4mm, Front off side 4mm and rears both 5mm. Experienced tech at local main dealer says these cars do hv a tendency to have slightly heavier tyre wear on NSF. Tracks perfectly, pulls up straight and def no uneven tyre wear across any of the tyres, just slightly heavier wear across the whole tread on nsf. Wheels swapped front to back as I aim to get 22k miles out of the set and replace all at same time around June.
Think I have read on here where NSF tyre wear is slightly higher too. As an aside, have you had the DPF temp sensor go yet? Again an issue with 2010MY cars apparently - mine went and was replaced last week in about 10 mins (once they had received sensor later that day) |

NSF will wear slightly quicker, ever thought about where most of the weight goes when going round a round-a-bout? And we have quite a few of those here...

Agree. NSF tyre on all my cars wears fastest...its roundabouts and a tendency to corner to the right at a faster speed than you would corner to the left I think.

sorry for the lack of response chaps....had a crazy last year (had a newborn and two months later my dad fell ill and passed away end of last year) and this has had to take a back seat...
issue is still happening...its happening at a car park we have always used. I've had new tyres (decided to go with the Pirellis, the same the car came with, just incase Volvo blamed them) and had the allignment checked...it was very slightly out...but the front wheel still doesn't see to have much traction.. The volvo garage started to blame the tyres..but that was knocked on the head. They rotated the wheels...put the new tyres on the rear and the 4mm tyres on the front...I haven't had a chance to see if it makes any difference. can't see why it would? thought the volvo is more front wheel drive? or am I wrong? I haven't had the DPF temp sensor go yet... ABS sensor and in turn DTC - I will get them to check these out. With the ice it was terrible, the car was sliding everywhere. My C class was better. As i'm in Croydon, not many fields I can test the system on. Does anyone know of a good volvo specialist in the Croydon area? |

I had something similar in my MY10 Active recently - sudden appearance of front wheel spin, albeit on both wheels rather than just NSF.
I noticed something strange about a month ago, heavy steering + the wheelspin mainly. On Christmas Eve, the dreaded 'AWD Disabled' error mesage appeared. The main dealer (in Croydon) took it in just before the New Year and diagnosed an electrical problem in the pump that drives the clutch in the rear wheel diff (i.e. no four wheel drive). Fixed the same day. Since then the snow has given me plenty of opportunities to test and there have been no problems - car is back to it's usual capable self. |

That's the garage that are telling me its a 'characteristic' of having 19" wheels... I haven't been getting any error messages on the dash and they say they have checked the ECU for errors.
