In my view it’s not the issue that’s caused it’s the way they accept the issue and resolve it.

I picked up my car from RCM with hand prints all over. The dealer principal came to see me and rectified everything. Do I need and want anything else... not really... things happen.

My next car was not bought from RCM though as they were not competitive on price. I used Clive Brook who were excellent too.

And along my journey the chap from Bells provided me with some information with no sell just support.

I do think there is something in common and I do think independents care more.

Same experience with Land Rover when I used them. Armstrong Massey were excellent... when taken over they were not hence changing brands and not looking back

My car came from service yesterday. Everything done, everything fine according to them.
Not quite - didn’t bother with broken vent that I asked to fix and is listed on job list - oh yes we had to order that. No need to tell me.
The software that I double checked with you, you would upgrade was not done. Ironically I did get a little brochure with my invoice showing how much gets updated with volvo software update. Are you sure we did do it. Yes - no stopstart icon on dash. After 10min - Oh yes your car doesn’t talk to computer, most likely has a faulty ODB unit. It’s out of warranty isn’t it? (Waiting... will the customer change his mind and move on) No, it’s extended so you can go and fix it but you didn’t think telling me was important? You think a main dealer service without checking for error codes is ok? Mumble, apology, mumble.
I told them I think mechanic is making an excuse as I had the same experience last year but I wouldn’t put it past them to replace some unit just to save their face though not checking error codes is precious.
Makes you wonder what else they claim to do but don’t bother with. Filters, oil?
Had my XC60’s 1st service. Checked the map version before taking to dealer.
When I got the car back, map was never updated, they are supposed to plug the car to the computer, and necessary and available update will come out. This means that if there was a system update for my car, it never got it. My map version was still from 2018. 2 versions down when I checked online. So I bought a USB stick and downloaded and installed it myself.

I am not sure about the adblue if they will top it up free of chrage on service, but it was not topped up. Still in the 1/3 level as before.

Swindon dealer.

As above the map or other app updates are not part of the service they are owner updates and very easy to do.

I’ve wondered about map updates occasionally. Yes, certainly for those of us with our own SIM cards, the update is done using our purchased data. What about those without the purchased sim though? Does the VOC system allow app and map updates? If so, it is tempting to remove my SIM card before starting a map update. If not, what’s the score with SIM-less cars?

My car is connected via bluetooth which I find works very well for RTTI, Spotify and other apps. No need to shell out on the three sim I barely get through 1gb a month.

Map update set to auto for my home region and the rest I can update with a memory stick (which I'm get to do).

I'm pretty sure they don't update unless over a user SIM, BT or Wifi connection.

Guess you've always got the desktop -> usb -> car option.

Updating the map is not the responsibility of the dealer on any service except the PDI ,, they have made it available free for you to do it yourself . And the map is completely independent of the rest of the car's software . It takes around an hour to load the map , you can't expect them to have cars all over the place linked up to battery chargers all day .. Some might do it for you if you are unable to do it yourself of course .

I couldn't agree more. Every individual and therefore every business makes mistakes. The sign of good service is recognising these mistakes and doing everything possible to rectify them as soon as possible.

No reasonable person expects perfection, but I think it's entirely reasonable to expect honesty, transparency and understanding - they are the bare minimum requirements for customer service.

Preston would be my nearest dealer but a friend has had very poor experiences there. I’m buying the car from Bury and have been depressed by the competence of the sales people there - which may be unfair as the people in the garage could be great.

Would anybody recommend a West Yorkshire or Lancashire dealer as outstanding, in their experience?

We have been very happy with Clive Brook Huddersfield. Can't fault them at all.
