Upselling winds me up.

Year 3 service and first MoT of my last XC60 I received a call, 'Our tech has noticed your brake pads and discs are wearing would you like us to change them all whilst we have it up on the ramp' quotes something like £550. I ask, has it failed it's MoT he says no it's not even an advisory as needs to be 'x'mm before it's shows up as an advisory and the depth is some mm above advisory level. His response, we like to recommend you change the discs and pads at around 'x'mm before they get to advisory stage.

I said no!

Fast forward 1 year it passes it's year 4 and second MoT on the same (original discs and pads) still no advisory.

How many people I wonder fall foul of upselling and shelling out needless money?

The car was returned that same week on the origianal discs and pads and rear tyres having covered 36,000 in 4 years.

I think this is always the best way to go. Some poor experiences can be down to multiple reasons whereas (in my opinion) good experience is usually replicated across all customers.

Unfortunately in most parts of the country dealers are few and far between so often you have no real choice ...

All volvo dealers were superb when they started out in the 60's , most were family businesses and you paid your money to the owner himself . Genuine friendships built up , customers called in just to say hello or pick up a bulb on their way through , or drop some apples off for the workers , They would buy a new car as regular as clockwork each year , there was never ever any hassles with the cost of things, there was more than one dealer in some big cities . There are a handful of these dealers still left so seek one out if you can . There were many more dealers back then , they have slimmed down to about 120 now . It is very hard to get a new dealer to open up these days with a £10m + investment to risk . There is one city i know of where they have been trying for 25 years to get one who will comply with all the standards and spend the money ..

Did you know they are supposed to show you or send you a video of any faults they find on the visit ? The technician walks around the car pointing out anything and giving a reason , you get it straight from the horses mouth then with no interpretation needed ...

Is that Bath by any chance? Used to be a dealer there with a good rep many years ago (John Tallis), but he moved over to Mercedes before being losing his franchise when they decided they only wanted large, glazed dealerships and had a big cull.
Be nice to get a new dealer there in my view, although I don't know if it would be considered too close to Bristol?

Bath is only 11 miles from Bristol , I remember it as Romans , ok back then but too close these days . Bristol is the successful affluent city now .

I live in Northampton but have been using the dealership at MK.

Hi

I would like to think you would get good service from us generally, yes... But by the fact you're using MK I'm guessing you're about to tell me different?... I welcome any constructive feedback and will happily pass on to the relevant managers should this be the case....

As for mentioning my name, I'm guessing by the rolling eyes emoji that this has been said in jest..but I'd always welcome meeting any forum member for a chin wag, so yes, feel free to ask for me and I'll happily sit down with a coffee for a chat about anything!!

Have a lovely weekend all.

Yes, that's right - John Tallis was based on Bathwick Hill (now a Tesco Express) during my childhood and had the franchise for 26 years (so I've just discovered). When he relinquished it in 1986 to move over to Mercedes Renrod (a local independent group) picked the Volvo franchise up, moving it to their new premises on the Lower Bristol Road. Turns out they only kept it for 10 years before Volvo pulled the plug (as you say, too close to Bristol) so they moved over to a Toyota franchise instead.

Lots of people must fall for it, because far too many upmarket brand dealerships try the same stunts. Audi dealers seem particularly keen on uplifting invoices at every opportunity thinking that every customer is a complete mug. Their experience is probably that a significant proportion are and pay up with not only no complaint, but gratitude for the dishonest advice.
Even a Nissan dealer's service sales rep phoned me up pre-service last year advising me to have an engine flush, air-con service and something else. All totally unnecessary crap to pad out their invoice and empty my pockets.
