V70: Electrical Day Running lights

I always rode with my motorcycle lights on - totally convinced it was safer. Believe people saw me earlier.

Cyclists (pedal) - always more visible with the blinking lights in my opinion. Far too many of this faternity show no lights, wear dark clothing and ride on footpaths/road/track - shudder how many near misses there must be. Seen many already and we are not yet in the depths of winter.

DRL - not fully convinced they will reduce accidents with respect to cars. Sadly, still get a kick out of the way they dip and then illuminate on start up in the morning as the reflection bounces off of the garage wall.

So if I use my fog/driving lights during daylight hours then everybody will see me even BETTER?

Thats another point. How long before people put megga bright DRL,s in just to be different.

This is where I have a problem.
I'm riding down the road on my motorbike in a decent sized gap between an LED DLR'd Audi and a HID DLR'd Volvo. My bike only has a Halogen headlight.
I might as well be wearing a candle on my helmet as car at a side road think oh, there's a gap between the Audi and the Volvo as the driver's fried retinas don't register the yellow Halogen light.

So, do we ban all motorbikes, make HID coversion kits legal ?
How do we address this problem ?
I don't just want to be a statistic on a piece of paper and a slab of meat in a morgue.

That's the problem isn't it? DRL on a small number of vehicles means they stand out, when it's on everything nothing stands out and not having DRL will very effectively hide vehicles!

I'm not even that convinced DRL aid safety from the studies I've seen, with the possible exception of motorbikes. Needless to say, I've switched my DRL off with the dealers - who were kind enough to do it for free. Hopefully my expensive bi-xenons will last a bit longer too!

And one small thing to remember folks is that you have to tell your insurers, their viewpoint is that you are altering the factory specification of the car

I was going to ask about the DRLs but found this thread so don't need to! Presumably the DRLs are simply the dipped beam headlights (unlike the LEDs on some cars e.g. audi) I'm guessing having the lights on all the time you are driving will considerably shorten the time between bulb failures. I have normally expected around 2 to 3 years life from headlight bulbs (25-30k miles pa and only switched on when visibility drops) I would guess that only about 1/3 of my driving is done in conditions where I would have the lights on in a "normal" car so with DRLs its going to be new bulbs every 10-12 months... I hope they are easy to change!
Some observations:
What is the point of having a daylight sensor to turn the lights on if they come on all the time anyway?
For that matter, what is the point of having a switch at all?
Why doesn't main beam work with the switch set to "0"?
If the lights come on by themselves and switch off by themselves regardless of where the switch is positioned is there any reason not to leave the switch set to "on" all the time?

This is how it works in Sweden and other countries that have them. Only the "Parking Lights" position (ie the one in the middle) turns off the main dipped beam. O and On are both On modes.

The light sensor also runs the intensity of the lights in you sat nav and other instrument lights.

If you have your light switch pointing downwards then you can not put full beam on permanently, it can only flash. You need to turn the dial to the top to enable the full beam to be put on, via the stalk, full time. If you have the winter pack then the washers rise up and clean your head lights only if the light dial is pointing to the top. (I asked the same question in the S40 section when I got my car. I could not see the point initially of having two dipped settings until this was explained)
