I turn them off during the summer, and on again when the clocks change. Saves me turning them on, on these damp drizzly days, as i always forget to turn them off again

As I have stated elsewhere, they are an excellent safety feature: do you really think Volvo fit them just for the hell of it, or to be different? NO, they are the result of years and years of research.
Also, if you disable them in any way shape or form you will invalidate your insurance. End of story. |

RE: Are DRL's a good safty feature that shouldn't be turned off?
When I bought my Phase II S40 I did check with my Insurance company about switching off the DRL's. They had no problem with this as the method of switching off the DRL's is stated in the handbook, therefore presumably acceptable to Volvo. I realise that this can't be done on Phase I's so perhaps this is what T240 was referring to.
I had a Phase I V40 a few years ago and got sick to death of people flashing me even when I angled the lights down during daylight hours. Stuart |

As you assumed, yes, I WAS referring to phase 1 cars, and as I have hastened to point out since, to alter your car from its' original specification, renders your insurance policy null and void; and if you inform your insurance company then the car is classed as 'modified' and your insurance premium will be altered accordingly (of course, most classic policies allow modifications without extra premium; but that really doesn't with S/V40s'as yet).
I still maintain they are an excellent safetly feature. |

I thought I read on another forum on this site that all new cars after a set date in the near future must have them.
Alfonz, how did you get your lights off, My friend tried but never managed. Could you have a "cross-over" car between Phases 1 and 2. Chris |

Anything that improves the visibility of your car to other drivers without impeading their view of the road is a good thing as far as safety is concerned, proven fact.
I don't get the problem with the DRLs, so what if they are on, who cares? What does it cost you to have them on, the occasional bulb blowing a little quicker and costing you some pence, but in that one in a million event where you need to be seen to stop some muppet having a head on with you they could save your life. Cheers, J |
