1986 Volvo 240 GLE Auto (Silver)
For spares or repair.
We inherited this car from my wife's father when he had his stroke and could no longer drive. It has done us well, being used as a second car up until the V70 was written off. The only thing was, once we used it as our only car, it was a bit juicy for our pockets and the amount of driving we need to do. The MOT was due in May, and we knew it needed a few jobs done to get it through, but decided to jump ship and get another more economical car, with the plans to do this one up over the summer... Unfortunately we failed to start, and with other projects I have ongoing, I just know it will sit there and not get done now. It seems a shame to send it to the scrap yard, when it could either be sorted out by someone willing, or at least go to help keep another of these mobile barns on the road. First the bad bits... I know it needs new brakes as I was planing to do them, and three days before we got the other car, they were a bit noisy and had obviously worn down further than I had realised. It has a fair bit of rust round the back end, where the boot hinges have leaked and allowed the water to sit in the tray under the boot floor. There are a few other bits here and there as well... Basically looks good from a distance, but not so good up close . A few years ago, the Kickdown cable seized, and when we found out how much it would cost to get it replaced by a garage, we decided to do it ourselves at our leisure.. Guess what... Never got done!!! We just drove it using the gear select to change down, and since this worked fine, there was no incentive to do it. Basically, there is a choice of cables, and until you have the old one out, there is no way of knowing which one it is, so can't pre-order it. Since it was our only car, we could not have it off the road for the amount of time it would take to do the job. Full mostly working electrics (Mirrors, windows, C/locking, Heated seats). At the end of last winter, the drivers side heated seat packed up, I think it is the switch, as the light does not come on either, but that is purely a guess. In the past, I have had problems with the window switches, but I think most have now been replaced, and as far as I remember, they are all now working. (I do have a couple of spare switches) It has done 112K miles, and the engine is perfect. Starts no problem and nice and smooth It has 4 nearly new tyres (approx 8mm), on steel wheels, and a reasonable spare. Tow bar with twin electrics. Blue velour interior which is good, apart from one of the rear seats got attacked on the back by one of the Fathers-in-law's dogs., she has a coupe of rips there Rear pull out boot cover Genuine Volvo Dog guard that hinges up against the roof when not in use. Basically we want £200 for her. She is located in Sevenoaks, Kent. We maybe able to sort out delivery, for petrol costs, if it is not ridiculously far away. Since she has no MOT, and the brakes are not as good as they should be, she will need to be trailered away. If anyone is interested, let me know, and if I have not heard anything in a couple of weeks, I am afraid the old lady will have to go to that great Volvo heaven, a bit a a time.

Hi mr ferret would it be possible to post a few pictures of it as pictures can tell quite a bit about a car.
Glad it served you well when you needed a reliable car. Regards Brian. |

Such a shame about the distance. I would gladly take it on at that price... however I think the cost of paying someone to transport it for me would be far too much. I hope someone takes it on

Sorry for the long delay in getting the pictures, we have been away on holiday for the last 3 weeks, so decided to wait until we got back, and were around again.
What a coincidence you should post on here today, I managed to get out and take some pictures of it just this afternoon, and when I went to post on here, I was wondering where the post had gone. She is very dirty, as she has been parked under the Silver birch tree, and has not been washed for about 9 months. The car has a smart battery charger plugged in at the moment, to look after the battery, which is the orange lead you will see in some of the pictures. I also remembered today that the heater fan has packed up, so need to add that to the list of bad bits as well. I made up a couple of computer fans, and put them on a sucker mount, over the vent to draw the air up to demist it, and then once moving the forward motion worked at moving the air through. Tyres Front, please excuse the junk on the passenger seat. Rear, Dog guard Dirty Engine bay So... is anyone interested?

The dog leg tee piece on the vacuum hose split, and we could not find one anywhere.
It left my wife stranded the first time it split, and the car was recovered to the house as having a blown head gasket... I discovered the problem was not anywhere near as bad as that, and used self amalgamating tape to do a fix while I tried to get the part, but it went again 2 weeks later. Sod's law the same recovery guy came to her aid. Ironically, he again put the fault down as a blown head gasket, and transported it back. Anyway, in desperation, as we needed the car the next day, I set to work at 10pm with the blow torch and some copper fittings and made that up. Never had any problems after that.

I also like the ingenious heater fan solution - creative thinking there!
