My wife's 07 regd C30 1.6D has suffered occasional failure of power steering on startup, with service warning message. I have tried twice to get the car the 20 miles or so, to the main dealer but the fault has disappeared just before arrival both times. The battery is original and the alternator has been passed OK so I assume that the system which reads the alternator output and enables the steering pump once the engine is running, is at fault. Does anyone know how this system operates? Is there an accessible (?sticky) relay involved as the current is surely too high to be electronically switched within the cpu.
