When this happens I just turn it off and it goes fine next time around.

I do find I can’t Rev it until it decides whether or not it wants to continue running, once it gets past about 3 seconds of firing up the engine tone changes and I can then Rev it, if I try too early it just dies. Does this sound like throttle issues or is this just the norm when starting?

Cheers
Typical yes ! it should start from cold just like it starts from warm ....

I gave up trying this morning as it was -3 and wouldn’t keep running, battery was getting low after about the twentieth start/stall routine.

Got a VCX Nano arriving tomorrow, got me an old laptop with Win7 on Vida 2014D installed.
Let’s see just how sick my car is, hope it’s not terminal 😔

Did you tap the throttle body with a light hammer before you tried?

when you next arrive home with a warm engine , leave the engine running and take the vacuum hose off the throttle flap actuator turn the engine off and try it in the morning , put the vacuum pipe back on after this test ...

Hi,

Yes I did tap the throttle body before I started, although maybe not hard enough.
It didn’t make any difference.
It always starts, then stops.
Like whatever checks are going on post starting suddenly decide to kill the engine.
Is almost like if it gets past 3 to 5 seconds of running I know it’s going to be ok.

Not much chance of starting it in these subzero temperatures so will have to wait until it warms up a bit, but once it does I will try the vacuum pipe test, cheers

Right, now the cold weather is out of the way. More testing has been done.
However it was averaging between 15 & 25 attempts at starting per morning during the cold weather. Start/Stop rinse and repeat until it decides to run.

Throttle valve has stuck on two occasions over the last month when trying to start but the unmistakable sound and smoke is not the normal problem I was having. So I’m thinking I can rule out the throttle valve.

The Vida investigation however has thrown up many problems, which is making me think this is electrical. I’m actually surprised it’s running at all, there are modules showing red everywhere.

BCM-0115 Communications between control units Communicational problems
CEM-3A00 ECM, Software Faulty Signal

Sounds costly

I would sort the throttle first . but the communication problems are the 3 twisted pairs of network wires in different plugs on the underside of the CEM a well known problem now after 16 years .. dealers will know which terminals to order . The female terminals in the plugs loose their spring grip over time and all the unplugging each year when the pollen filter is changed doesn't help..

Throttle valve all cleaned out, nothing jamming. Actuator working sweet no missing teeth or leaks when tested with a vac pump. Still have the same problem with the electrics. I’ve had to park it up and get another car for work until I have time to investigate it properly.

Got myself a 2011 V50 R-Design D4 as a replacement

I was having starting issues although not cold related

I was getting air in the fuel lines which was causing bad starting in a morning up to the point it would not start

It turned out that the fuel was draining back leaving a lot of air in the fuel line so not getting pressure

The fuel pipe from which runs from the metal fuel pipe to the fuel filter was allowing air in

I replaced this with a piece of fuel hose and a none return valve and I now have no air and a much better starting car

Strange thing is mine always starts 2nd time then stops after about 3 seconds. This goes on until eventually it continues to run and I’m good.
Maybe I have a combination of air in the fuel and some electrical gremlins.

Maybe you do

But I would first start with the issues you can see like the air in the fuel line
