The Audi A4 manual override is SO much better designed. Putting it in the boot on the C70 was really stupid.

I can't go into too much detail but I can say that the Volvo dealer in Sheffield used to be Harratts based in a joint site with Nissan on attercliffe road. When they sold the site to Vertu they sold all the special tools etc along with the site. It's standard practice when different dealers take over a franchise that stock/tools are sold across (obviously they have little to no use for other makes of car so no point in keeping them). I don't know about the most recent dealer change in Sheffield but would be very surprised if they haven't ended up with all the stuff Harratts originally had plus the newer stuff for the most recent models.
PS The number of Volvo special tools is crazy compared with other makes. They need an entire room/corridor whereas other makes have one or two boards in the workshop!

He started with Mk1's and then moved on to Mk2's so conversant with all of them. I'm no fan of facebook, but would stand on a street corner and sell my body before taking an angle grinder to my C70 - each to their own.

Seriously: as suggested, remove the tonneau cover from the brackets -four bolts, I think - then open the boot and use the manual tools - the lack of cover will not affect the operation of the roof. At least you would be able to get the car mobile to get sorted and then replace the cover as and when.

I managed to get a towel between the boot and the cover to act as a buffer to protect the paint and managed to open the boot up enough to move the child seat enough to access the manual controls.

And then I was able to wind the cover down and open the boot.

After which I pushed the rib down to the rear deck and the roof controller happily took over and finished tensioning and locking it down.

I'm still going to try and track down a VST or MT Pro for future use, e.g. if I ever need to calibrate the system.

I got my multimeter out today and tracked down the root cause of the problems. The motor in the front of the roof that operates the front latch has failed. I've ordered a replacement for £25 off ebay. Volvo wanted £650 for one.

Brilliant - loving the "trumpet" fanfare too! Mind you, you deserve it, that's a great fix. I don't have a soft top but there are enough stories on here to convince me they can be very tricky to fix without the right diagnostic tools, so you've done a blinder there IMHO - nice one.

Thanks a lot. It was massively satisfying, figuring it out and fixing it myself. I was a bit intimidated by the roof to start with, but I've learned so much about it in the last few days, I actually feel a lot more confident about dealing with any future glitches.

I'm looking forward to being able to help other people with theirs.

Here are some commands that Vadis might be using to control the roof through a VST.
The commands will be sent using D2 protocol through K-line on pin 7 in the OBD2 connector.
ECU address is 0x42
