We bough an ex rental car via Arnold Clark for my missus. She does so few miles that within one year of ownership the car was at average mileage, and within two years old it was well below.
No problems whatsoever. As previous posters have said, go with your eyes open and prejudices closed.
The beetle may have been down a similar road as it is six years old and only shows 23k miles

My first S60 was first owned by Hertz and it was a superb car, no major problems. I hire a lot of vehicles for my job and they always arrive exceptionally clean, I certainly don’t drive them any differently to my own car. As long as they’re serviced correctly there’s no issues for me

Viewed and drove car today, lovely, solid, smooth...but I am comparing it to a 185k mile beetle that creaks like a galleon in a storm and has the structural rigidity of a wet shoe box. I must say, the dealer was incredibly helpful and zero pressure, they even had a 'non sales' guy to sit with me on test and he knew everything about the car. Decisions decisions. It won't do anything my current car doesn't and would cost oh, about 20 times what mine is worth....mmm🤔

Stop playing George, you know you want it or you would not be taking test drives.

I test drove a new xc 90 as thinking of changing the van and the one I drool over is 2 ton out of the factory. Few miles of test drive and I'm convinced the new xc 90 is not for me. Possibly an older manual but the new computor with a sofa does not float my boat at all.
Alternatively I buy a sensible van and keep the XC70.

Paul.

I'm just averse to the thought of keeping any car for four or five years Paul, but yeah, think I do want it your right

My experience...

The car had done 100K in 3 years, probably well serviced, but then sold (probably cheap as a 3yr old car with 100K on is not going to command a premium price) then it was run into the ground for the next 7 years. I then had the misfortune of owning it (or what was left of it) and the list of things to fix filled 2 sheets of a4. The engine had blown its head and everything on it was worn out, missing or broken. So I sold it to an idiot who told me he knew about cars (but didn't even check under the bonnet) for 700 quid more than it was worth...

Have never dealt with a less motivated dealer. Waiting on call backs etc over several days, have intimated we want to buy car... As a result off to Glasgow to look at two Honda crz in comparison, and a smart cabriolet in Dundee. May end up with beetle but if not, it's dealers fault,!

personally I would avoid Arnold, you really don't need the stress in your life.

The whole experience has soured things. I took Mrs to view all cars including beetle and we both agreed beetle it was, but the whole shiny suited snake oil sales stuff has put me off, probably permanently, so I have decided to do what I have done all my life and find a borderline unusual, possibly eccentric used car for a grand or so, rinse and repeat...stick it to the man, he hasn't earned the right to my dollar😅

I and my wife and daughter have had rental cars on a few occasions, all of them have been clean and tidy, worked properly and they've been driven with due regard, on the other hand my sister's car which she bought ex demonstrator I wouldn't touch, one lady owner but totally abused.
No Dave you aren't. Some of the comments on here really do seem to confirm the widely held opinion and received wisdom about "Volvo drivers". Extraordinary, but keeps one smiling.
