help needed please with no mpg etc shown display ?

hi all i am hopping someone can tell me how to fix my dash reading problem no messages no mpg etc just no display showing at all display at all ?
no control/ response by left stalk?
2005 volvo xc70 115,000 miles.

Shine a torch on the display.
If you can make out the letters then, the back-light bulb needs replacing.

After replacing the back-light bulb Cheshired5 refers to and if you've tried turning the control knob on the stalk through the different read positions try removing the stalk and cleaning the wiring loom plugs to the yoke contacts with contact cleaner.

Use Vida and Dice or similar to check the code shown by the stalk(s) ECU - I doubt whether what is probably a "non-serviceable" switch/ECU combination unit can be taken apart - if the left hand stalk can be removed or separated from the yoke it would enable you to check the actual contact being made at each switch point.

I know the simple indicator switch on a 2001 model can be taken apart and cleaned but I have no idea whether the multipoint ring switch can be cleaned in a similar way.
As such, it may prove cheaper to get a known working replacement second hand unit from a breaker or the web eg https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VOLVO-V70...-/283943519937 equally as there is a module built into the yoke it may be that the module has to be programmed to the car - hopefully some on the forum will know.

If you can separate the switch from the yoke, even if you can't take it apart, immersing the switch in contact cleaning fluid - propyl alcohol works bests and is a lot cheaper by the litre than buying switch or contact cleaner which is also propyl alcohol. Leave it soaking for a few minutes, remove from the fluid and shake out as much fluid as you can from the switch. Leave it to dry out fully before refitting.

Ah - not all models have the mpg readout but all have fault warnings eg blown bulbs etc - ie the onboard computer isn't fitted in all models - try leaving the boot door or any door open, then start the car - if you get a message on the lower left screen area showing words to the effect of boot open or door open then yours may not have the onboard mileage computer.

On the left stalk you should have a rocker switch to clear the screen message(s) and if yours has the computer a knurled plastic ring approx 1.5cm wide which rotates clockwise or anti-clockwise to access the different mileage parameters - if the ring isn't there you don't have the onboard.

oh what like a piece of plastic instead of a dark coloured LCD screen? any chance of a picture?
