Hi, how did you mate the type 9 to the 360 engine? Did you use and modify the Ford bellhousing. Also how much by did you have to enlarge the transmission tunnel by and was the gearstick position ok. Cheers..

The type 9 box can be mounted to the volvo engine with an adaptor plate. A backwards step as most of the ford guys are fitting the volvo box to either a volvo or ford engine in the escorts.

You need to be making a lot of power to remove the best part of a 360 - the rear mounted gearbox. The rear mounted gearbox is something you would normaly find on a Porsche and here it is on a Volvo! If you wanted a convetional setup then go with a 240. The 240 is a complete package ready to make good power. A little big and heavy but hard to break.

Thanks. Do you think the standard 360 transmission and prop arrangement will be reliable with say 200 - 220bhp. I have tried searching for gearkits and LSD's for the 360 but so far drawn a blank.

yes for road use but for competition when you have to be brutal, .... questionable . The weak spot on the 360 is the clamp at the back connecting the shaft to the gearbox input shaft . I had to change a few of these even on road cars when the 360 was current , but the vast majority of 360 road cars never had a problem .
I'd go for an Alfa 75 transaxle which also incorporates the clutch and flywheel so you can use a normal type ( strong) proshaft and connect it directly to an automatic gearbox type drive plate bolted to the engine via a rotoflex type coupling as per alfa 75 ,3 litre . , even better weight distribution and no bulkhead body mods needed !

The drive shaft clamps have been known to fail, but I find it is often due to incorrect maintenance. Replace with new bolts each time and torque with a decent quality torque wrench.

The thing is there is no maintenance on the clamp , even when the clutch is renewed the clamp remains untouched . Only a gearbox removal will need the clamp removing , has anyone known a 360 Transaxle fail ? not me ..

If you are really really interested in rallying a 300 series I would suggest that you contact Svenska Bildellar in the Netherlands.
The owner has several 300's that he uses for racing and rallying (as well as an S40 and a 240) and I am sure that he will be able to help you.

But as a word of caution; he works about 14-16 hrs a day he is a really busy man and may not always be able to help you straight away.
