Just looked up Parkers for the specs.
My 2003 model - max speed 115
My 2010 model - max speed 118

Of course I was looking at my speedo for reference - not an official time trial.

EU will restrict all cars soon. They have already restricted Vacuum cleaners (power wattage)

Many years ago (more than 30 years) when I was younger and shall we say a more enthusiastic driver in my new Black 740 turbo (quick in its day, normal XC90 speeds today) overtaking everything to gain time on a long trip over the Pennines en-route to Oban, Scotland, I remember flying passed (with a bit of a smurk) an old beat up VW campervan chugging up a steep hill, many, many miles later on the M8/A74 my wife much to my dismay wanted to use the motorway services so I pulled in for her comfort break, I sat in the car eager to set off again and not many minutes later I watched this old VW campervan chug in and park right next to me, what had I gained, A valuable lesson that changed my driving style and has stayed with me the rest of my life. Audi drivers have now taken up this activity after BMW drivers have had their day, Range Rover drivers will never change.

THe reason volvo have done this is to reinforce their statement that :
" No one will be killed or seriously injured in any of their new cars from 2020"
Any crash in any car above those speeds will mean instant death for many human beings , for one persons stupid actions .

Can they retrofit this please? I have a 4 cylinder diesel that has 160mph on the Speedo. I've never had it past 12 o'clock onto the other side. A 112mph top end with the rest of it recalibrated would be great.

My version of this is a trip from Devon to home about 200 miles. Myself and mate in a Jaguar 3.8 S type with twin 8 gallon fuel tanks (flick switch changeover) and my sister in her Vignale Fiat Gamine (a Fiat 500 twin cylinder air cooled) with a specialist bòdy (imagine Noddys car)) Mate and I got home with one tank empty and second with a couple of gallons left. Sister got home 20 minutes later (remember, virtually no motorways then) with enough petrol in her 4.5 gallon tank to go to work for a week.
Should add I'm talking 1970

Not all of us drive short distances fast (like mentioned above). And I also like to drive fast as it feels much better and doesn't put me to sleep in a car which is far less safer than driving fast. I couldn't care less about fuel consumption (there is diff in tyre wear and all car components wear as well) after all I'm driving an very expensive car not some cheap garbage... Which doesn't have limited top speed by the way.

I gained 4 hours drive time when driving real fast with luck of empty roads towards Denmark from Slovenia compared to trip few months back with slow traffic and taking it "easy". Now tell me that's not a lot... There are also other things to consider, like free will and what you pay? You pay 240hp car (example D5) and you can drive it for 60% of its power?

Anyway I will never, ever agree to this BS. Even Tesla doesn't limit cars to "safe" figures and they have all the control. I doubt a lot of people would consider buying tesla that goes 112mph only.

It all sounds very draconian and "Big Brother" to me... especially with what's been happening (behind the scenes) in the recent few months.
Also ... why 112 mph ??? Is there any logic or science behind this figure ?

Why 80?

Why not 79.63 or 84.27?

Why at all?

Because 80 is a speed at which most people are naturally comfortable at on a relatively uncrowded motorway. Obviously a lot of people prefer to drive slower and a very few, much faster.
Speed limits used to be set to suit what the average speed of traffic was for a particular stretch of road, because the vast majority drive at a sensible speed for the conditions.

I am finding this thread entertaining.

I wonder whether one day we will look back on such exchanges thinking them as bizarre as insisting on one's right to ride a horse along every road, with a pistol in your pocket, before walking into a smoke filled bar or restaurant.

"Do you mean people were allowed to drive themselves, Grandad? What, and the cars often crashed into each other when people made mistakes? And people were killed and seriously injured, partly because people felt it was their right to drive around the way they wanted in metal boxes at great speeds only a few metres apart? Did those same people think they had a right to carry guns while out shopping and waive them around, risking injury to other people?"

I'm not advocating either side of this argument, just saying that the debate between limiting personal freedom against allowing people to take risks which could impact on the health and well-being of others is an interesting debate.
