Question S80 D5 185HP 2nd gen, common problems? What to look for?

Hey, this is my first post.

Very much sorry if this has been brought up before.

I am very interested in purchasing a S80 2nd gen. It's hard to find info on the internet about the common faults.

The car I will be looking at shortly...

-2.4 D5 with 185HP
-Second generation (manufactured from 2006 till today).
-This car is from 2006. First year batch off the 2nd gen.
-Car is being sold through official Volvo dealership in Germany
-82k miles (133.000km)
-Full official service history
-Manual transmission

There are some issues I've read like steering rack leaking, injectors failing, engine mounts cracked, EGR valve and so goes the list...

Another doubt: what happens if the car has error codes and have been reset?- Any way to know they've been reset, or read older logs?

At what mileage should the timing belt + water pump + accessory belt and tensor be changed? (I've heard the water pump isn't recommended but for the peace of mind..)

I am kind of assuming an official dealership would not tamper the odometer or hide any faults and should be decent enough... but better safe than sorry, so I prefer asking you the experts before I hand over my cash to them...

Thanks in advance!

Aux belts and tensioner are the main items to worry about. The intervals change depending on the year but generally, every 56k miles or 5 years will mean no issues. Timing belt, tensioner and A/C belt are every 108k miles or 10 years. If your going to do the water pump, do it every 108k miles.

As above plus engine top mount and pneumatic front mount can cause engine judder and noise in cab when worn. Front wishbone front bushes can wear causing tracking or vague steering. Drivers display module can fail but can be easily repaired by various companies . You may get a better response from the correct forum . This forum is for the P3 models. Good luck with search.

It's P3 for the V70/XC70, but only P2 for the S80, which came out a year earlier than the V70/XC70. He's in the right place.

Thanks very much for the information.

It looks as if the S80 2nd gen is a quite solid car, trouble free? I think tot like a Honda or Toyota though?

Coming from an Audi A4 B6 1.8T, nothing but nightmares and put only 60k miles on it... Turbo failed, about 13 times electrical gremlins, auto transmission problems, it literally ate up xenon bulbs (about 5 bulbs the last year I had it) + twice ballast had to be changed. All this despite the car being serviced and treated well..

Apparently the German equivalent cars are not as reliable... Keep on hearing they're money pits no matter where I inquire... My brother had the 5 Series e60 with about 90k miles and had quite a few issues as well..

Anyway, I love this Volvo s80. Looks beautiful and such a nice ride, hopefully I can get some more info about from you guys.

I would attempt to get a copy of the service book from the dealer and contact the garage the previous owner(s) used to ask about any issues (I always do this in the UK) but I am not sure how good your German is.

Not sure how early the car is but one thing to bear in mind; very early build cars can be problematic (all manufacturers have this issue). My 2007 V50 (first of the face-lifted cars with the 'egg crate' grills) was plagued with build/reliability problems e.g. I went through five bi-xenon headlamps.
