Why no 3 door V40
Does anyone know why volvo have never considered producing a 3 door V40? Think it would look great and appeal to younger drivers

Plus if some of the rumors are to be believed the v40 is going to have quite a short lifespan in its current form.

The V40 is a stop gap measure to replace the V50 , S40 and C30 whilst volvo develope their own 100% volvo bottom of the range models again . The V40 should be a rare model in 10 years time ... Its not one of my favourite models as the rear is so claustrophobic with very poor visibility and the front is difficult to get into for tall people with those very low curved windscreen pillars and high seats .

3 door?
This Volvo is built on the current Focus platform which is a slightly lengthened version of the previous one on which the C30 etc. were built.
Maybe that would not have suited a 3 door hatch configuration. there is no 3 door current Focus, more likely though that Volvo not only did not have the funds to create replacements for all those small cars at that time but, as has been said, they were saving up for and planning the shared Volvo/Geely small platform. Probably no 3 door because sales of the 5 door is shocking.
Why are sales of the 5 door so shocking? One word. Price. Who in their right mind would pay nigh on 30K? (which is the cost of a nicely specced V40 with a nice 2.0 engine - petrol or diesel) The Volvo V40 will be remembered as the car that should have been at least 5 grand cheaper, as no Volvo is going to beat the 1 series/A3/Golf/Merc A class sector. I looked at the A3 sports back S-line and Golf GTD, I pushed the A3 into £37000! With bells and whistles matching the Volvo although some features the Volvo does not have. The GTD from memory was around the 35k both these figures were before discounts. Even with discounts I doubt they would of come close. What annoys me most about the V40 is all the cost cutting measures, like not moving the hand brake, no foot rest, not moving the media screen (slightly tilted to passenger/LHD), emergency key access passenger side/LHD, cheaper floor mats, cheaper seats. The list goes on. If you want to compete against the competition, the little details make all the difference. I do think it is a great car though, at the right price. |

Anyway I thought the XC60 was Volvos best selling model? Yep you can get a new V40 for £20k,even a bit less, although it is pretty basic spec, and basic engine. Regards |

Volvo is the fastest growing brand in the top 5 prestige brands at present .. The XC90 was volvos best selling model in 2008 :-) The V40 has surpassed the XC60 recently . Another thing , i dont think any volvo has been basic for many years , you drive say a V40 D2 and then jump in a V60 or S60 T5 there is hardly any difference except for the Performance . err and economy !
