As someone who (unless I become a millionnaire) will never buy a new car I reckon the scrappage scheme is a load of nonsense anyway. I am all the more convinced now. It means that those of us on a tight budget will eventually be priced out cos no old bangers left. Makes me sick that a perfectly roadworthy car without fault HAS to be scrapped.

agreed! the seller j davidson's is a scrap metal merchants/processors in Altrincham, Cheshire which is a couple of miles away from me. they have been/are selling loads of these vehicles on ebay, now if these cars are being passed or sold onto them for scrappage/processing then surely that's exactly what they should be doing with them? crushing them etc. not that i'm that way inclined myself but surely there will be some people that will buy them to put them back on the road with a different ID. example = lets say if i had an s40 for example that had a goosed engine or damaged bodywork and i didint want to pay £XXXX to get it repaired but there was a perfectly good car like this one available for peanuts then i would be tempted to buy it and just simply swap the plates over! |

That's a possibility.
Aren't the government supposed to be encouraging us to recycle. Although crushing the car is recycling, I think that it is better to use something until it is "beyond economic repair" then scrap it. The scrappage scheme is in my eyes not recycling but encouaging people to buy new cars. £before morals, but what's new. |

I recently saw a car transporter with very presentable looking cars on board-on their way to a big scrap dealer in Kirkaldy-what a waste! There were Volvos,VWs and SAABs amongst them.Scrappage is a load of b######s for two good reasons.1.Most of the cars bought through scrappage are the tin boxes that come from the far east, not really helping the so called British car industry(what is a British car these days?) 2.A car uses more energy being built than it uses in its life so it's not a green scheme at all.

I seen in work this week a MK2 Orion (MK4 Escort shape) which was MOT'd to be scraped, this car was OUT-OF-THE-BOX, it would be an excellent example of a classic and its to be cubed by next week. I wonder if one of these cars could be registered in Southern Ireland after going through the scrapage.....

That's almost cheap enough to buy it and ship it to the US for resurrection! Is this another case of UK tax payers being shafted? (Excuse the coarseness.)
On the positive side, we do have many, old, unsafe cars on the roads over here because some States do not have any effective annual inspection. In fact, the ONLY reason that I actually have to take my car IN for the "inspection" is so they have somewhere to affix the sticker! You pay your 10 bucks in the office and present your Proof of Insurance (which I could have obtained that morning , and which will expire tomorrow!), they fill out the sticker (without seeing the car), then they come out, scrape off the old sticker and replace it with the new one! No MOT worries here! |

The scrappage scheme was to help sell new cars, no thought was put into the effect on the environment. Scrapping this car now is criminal. Hopefully someone will find a way that this car can be kept on the road. Trouble is, the person who fiddles with a few numbers on the car to re-register it will be labelled the criminal!

I know a local volvo dealer which had to take in a 1999 S40 for scrappage with 17000 miles on it .... you can imagine the condition of it , like new ... and it HAD to go for scrapping .. no alternative ...
