As said I expected that you would be unhappy with my post but yes I think you need to see things in context. You have made it clear that you are unhappy about it and that is quite understandable. I am not dismissing at all the risks that can arise from personal injury - but I do think there is very little risk of personal injury arising from this issue, and that your comments about the manufacturer are inappropriate and actually not helping your case.

For further information when undertaking safety checks/risk assessments on my medical equipment damage to any part of any high pressure system hose requires immediate withdrawal from service and replacement. Damage down to the cord would be classified as destroyed and would initiate an immediate safety alert/recall to the manufacturer.

I am trying to keep this thread as factual as possible as I am not a vehicle technical expert

Please your opinion is just an unqualified opinion

I am not trying to to disparage you but you will not have to deal with a repair to your xc90 other people will

Look fine you don't think there is a risk of personal injury.

VOSA (VSB) do.

I'll take opinion from VSB on this one.

Had my power steering hose cable tie replaced free of charge due to recall with a metal p-clip with rubber insert by Volvo during its service in 2012 had hose replaced as it had rubbed against the engine cover and started to erode the flexible hose.
You can flex the hose away from the engine cover or remove cover to check for wear on the hose
No more wear on hose since clip was fitted.
part must cost pennies and is a 5 min job to fit

Mine is a 2007 model

Just to clarify;

There are other considerations not just other road users

Default My thread is all over the place

Just to clarify

- loss of power assistance has other considerations not just with regard to other road users.

- certain types of pressure hose may have approved manufacturer repair. At the price point of automotive components any damage results in replacement not repair so in effect the component is destroyed (non-repairable).

-" cute and cuddly " Volvo are the same as every other manufacturer in their response to problems being forced to correct defects is expensive.

One final comment

-consideration of the collateral damage caused by an unrestrained hydraulic pressure hose failing

There is a reason for a substantial metal clamp with rubber p clip

Having seen the pictures of my car and Alex's car and the modification in just dave's car anybody still think a cable tie is quality safety engineering at it's best? Even as a temporary repair?

No chance. Looks more like the work of 'Bodge It and Creepaway'.

Obviously I dont know what grade of Ty-Wrap/cable-tie etc was used or how that varied in the first pass fixes used by the dealers, I dont even know if Volvo specified the grade to be used, nor how it came to break on dewsons XC90.

I am also not condoning the fix, as it, at best, should have been temporary, however you would be gobsmacked at what a properly specified ty-wrap/cable tie can support, far, far in excess of any strain or pressure the power steering hose in question can generate, but it is horses for courses.

So I think if VOSA have been contacted, let it run its course and refrain from commenting on what we think we know, rather than assumption or misconception, and wait for the facts.
