Question XC90 DVD Console

Apologies if I've missed a similar post, but can't find the same scenario. We've just bought an XC90 which has factory fitted screens in the headrests, but the DVD player is missing - I think it would have been an integrated player within the console between the front seats, but I may be wrong.

The console we have is very basic (just storage of CD's), it clips in and out and exposes some connectors, but this may be standard on all XC90's I guess. We have a DVD remote, but I don't know whether this will be of any use. There are also controls fitted at eye level to the rear of the car on each side, but again I'm not too sure what these would have operated, presumably the DVD player?!

The obvious question is whether we would be able to fit a replacement console or a bog standard portable DVD player get it all back up and running? Any general info on all of this would be very gratefully received and I can of course post pics if necessary.

Thanks

What year is your XC90?

Earlier models had a changer in the boot somewhere

Thanks for the reply - it's an '04 plate.

I guess there's an outside chance that I'm missing the obvious and we've got a DVD player tucked away in the boot, but I don't think so. I really hope that the garage foolishly missed this, but I doubt it. I'll double check tonight.

If we are looking at a new DVD player would you have any ideas of an affordable way of connecting to the headrest screens?

Thanks again.

Hi, this is an 'old favourite'.

There are threads re installing card based drivers and also android devices. If I were starting with no DVD, I would start there.

But just check to the left of the boot space under the tray. This is where the 10dvd player sits. Also look under the left side 'sort of triangular' floor panel to the left of the lifting luggage rack. If you have ever had a rear DVD player the DVD adapter assembly will be under there.

My screens have four buttons along the bottom, with ignition on, press and hold the right hand button, the screens should power up with no signal.

Finally, is the DVD controller silver? If it is then you have, or used to have the 10dvd player in the boot. I believe the international, standard DVD has an all black controller.

If the 10dvd player is just missing, there are usually units on eBay for about £100.

Hope this helps, cheers john l

Thumbs up

Hi John,

That helps a huge amount - I need to get myself home to have a good look. And yes we do have a silver remote, so all signs are that it was originally located in the boot and fingers crossed it still is, which will be slightly embarrassing on the one hand, but very pleasing all the same.

Thanks very much for taking the time to reply!

Hi John. I'm officially stupid! Either that or the previous owner has created a problem for me which I can't get around. I lifted the rearmost panel in the floor of the boot which has three hinges and a diagram which suggests that there should be a pull chord in the centre, but this is missing. I gently tried to lift it with a screwdriver, but it won't budge.

Even more annoying is that the panel that I lifted is damaged where the hinges are fixed which I assume occurred by someone trying to force it back down as it's almost impossible to lower it once it has been lifted - the hinges seem to lock out when open.

This is sending me stir crazy - any suggestions?

Hi again, the top tray when lifted is usually restrained with a webbing either side with a keyhole plate. The keyhole plate latches onto two studs that protrude through the lower tray. You need to get these pins central in the holes as they can catch and stop the tray lifting. Cheers

So the good news is that we do indeed have the player in the boot!!! It seems to have loaded a DVD without bother, but the next challenge is that the remote doesn't seem to work and so we can't power it up. I've changed the battery, but the LED isn't lighting up at all so it might be terminal. I'll have a look into whether I can get a replacement although I'm not too hopeful. Either way we've got more than I thought so I'm sure we'll get it sorted one way or another.

Thanks so much for your input everyone!

Hi, with ignition on, press the right hand button on the screen without the remote, the screen should turn on.

If you look at earlier threads on this subject (DVD remote) you will find a manual for the screen (blue background)

I thought mine did not work until my 6 year old grandkid turned it on!

I assume you checked the led on the remote by looking through a camera viewer, it is not visible with naked eye.

You do occasionally see spare remotes on eBay.

Cheers and good luck.h

Hi again Toby,

Another point is that you also need wireless headphones to hear the DVD. They are Thomson rf headphones. (863mhz transmitter).

Cheers
