940 mpg
1996 940 2.3 normally aspirated, best ever 30.9, worst 23.6 usual around 24.7. Yes I very dull and keep records of such things! For comparrison, my 340 1.4L auto never got over 24.4, and often went below 20.

I guess you do alot of miles, I also used to do the same thing in my 340s+360s+940s, doing 50 miles a day. Incidently my partner had a 1985 340 GL manual that did 45mpg average on my work run.

Update!
Coming back from the Footman James show in Birmingham two weeks ago, the 780 managed a new record at 31 mpg! Not bad for a 24 year old (well, almost) with a B280E engine + auto.

745 Fuel Economy.
Hi,
not much to say about around town economy, as I tend to use the 745 for longer runs - the car: a 1986 745 B230K Auto (4 speed/lockout top) with Weber conversion. Economy. A run from Lincolnshire to Cornwall via Sussex coast and Weymouth to Truro and back: over 1000 miles including running around Cornwall. Fuel used - somewhere between 31 and 32 mpg...I was very surprised and double checked fuel bought against the distance travelled. If measured just on the motorway it would have been lower (34/35mpg). I only checked it as we'd been given the car by my Wife's Dad (he bought it in 1988) and was curious as it was the first run we'd taken it on. Did not expect it to be that good, car not driven much over 65mph (I choose to be lightfooted in the car), that seems a happy speed for a 24 year old - have to respect the old girl. I intend to keep it around for the next (at least) 10 years. Prufrock. P.S I use Mathy additives (German TUV approved products) in the gearbox, engine and differential. I bought this current silver 1998 2.3 LPT manual in Newquay before Xmas.
I drove it from there, to Lands End ( had never been there before...so despite teh fact it was sub zero, and pitch black I wanted to go lol ), then to Pembroke in Wales. Got ferry to Rosslare then drove it home. Despite a lot of the driving at 70mph or thereabouts. It averaged a quite respectable 32mpg on the trip home. |

volvo miles per gallon
Hi
My 740 GLE with a B230E engine and manual 4 speed plus overdrive regularly gave 35 to 36 miles per gallon, my 240GL with a B200E and five speed manual box also gave about 35 to 36 miles per gallon but my 740SE with a B200E and five speed manual box can only manage about 26 miles per gallon. |
