Lightbulb Auto into Geartronic?

A post by S60Ben got me thinking about modifications (but don't tell SWMBO!)...

A know a little about auto gearboxes, and I suspect that they only difference between the regular auto (like mine) and a geartronic is software on the transmission module and the actual gearstick itself.

The box might well be the same, unless there are minor differences in the clutches or bands to hold specific gears rather than just set a limit as in the standard box?

So, my question is, does anyone think a regular auto could be converted into geartronic, and has anybody been mad enough to try it?

It has been done before by someone on this forum or on VPCUK.
It's just a change of hardware (the gear selector) and possibly a software update. It seemed pretty straightforward.

It's exactly the same box.

What is involved in the swapover I'm honestly not sure of.

This sounds promising! More digging required I think.

Of course, most geartronics stay in Drive all the time...

Found it:

It actually looks remarkably easy.

Except for the fact that there is no geartronic for the old S80 D5, so I'd need the gear shifter from a 2.9/T6 and the TCM from a S60/V70 geartronic to be sure it actually works...

But then I might have the first and only P2 S80 D5 geartronic!

Got to be worth a try...
