When COVID is over there will probably be some good half finished projects going for a song.

By chance I noticed this one is for sale again (same dealer - I'm pretty sure it was on the market last summer, maybe before that):

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/An-Incred...8AAOSwtbFgAESl

... I'd say it is probably better than the orange car in that it has a complete and documented history and it is a GL. At £8k it is still probably £3,000 over priced, but a lot less than the £11,000 orange car.

It's a much more realistic dealer price and with the history given, justifies a lot of that hefty price tag.

Let me put that another way Alan - when you began your search for the RB, if your budget had been 3 times what you gave for the RB, would you have considered that one above?

That is an interesting thought Dave. The answer is pretty simple really - I was considering a similar car to that one - a red 244 manual that had been for sale at a dealer in (if I remember correctly) Ringwood for about £6,000 - and eventually dismissed it because the point of the project was not to buy an immaculate 40 year old Volvo, but a project I could improve and adapt. So that answer is no.

If I’d been in the market for a near show car then I suppose the car above would be a pretty good candidate - I think £8,000 is a lot for that car, and I’m pretty sure I’ve seen it for sale (off and on) for 6 months or so, so I should think an offer would buy it.

Whilst the car above is very nice and has a good history, it i still a couple of years away from being an historic vehicle, and for me would be a bit too good. I like the RB because I can park it on the road, use it as a daily driver and fiddle around with it (including subtle modifications) myself. I couldn’t really do that with a pristine car (well I could, but I’d feel really guilty).

:-)

You've amswered both questions there Alan including the one unwritten!

To sum up, if you'd wanted a car simply to own/drive/look at/enjoy the £8k car would have been perfect, as you wanted to do with it exactly what you've been doing with the RB then the RB was the perfect choice, irrelevant of budget?

I think most dealer prices are open to offers, i always think of dealers "having a deal" which involves negotiations and sellers "simply selling" and the price is the price.

That is exactly right Dave, the RB was exactly what I was looking for; if I’d wanted a car to do 200 miles/year driving to a couple of county shows and spend all day telling kids not to drop ice cream on the seats I’d have bought one.

I sort of have a feeling that if one showed up at the dealers selling the £8,000 car with folding money then one might drive it away for £1,500 less (Mike Brewer does that all the time on Wheeler Dealers).

I suspect you're spot-on here Alan, wave £6k in folding under the seelers nose and the negotiations start - even £5500 would get them interested!
Final figure would be ablut £6.5-7k i expect but the lower you start (while still being sensible and serious) the better the end price usually.

... particularly for a car which has been for sale for at least 6 months, in the middle of winter and during a pandemic...
