Default Sticky black stuff in 940s

Just wondering what the sticky black stuff used in the 940 is.

Its used for some wiring and sticking purposes, in particular for the grill behind the ventilation inlet in the scuttle panel.

I've just got a fresh scuttle sprayed up to match the newly sprayed bonnet and wings and want to do a good job. They removed the sticky stuff after I had masked it up in the hope of leaving it there!

Also need something to stick the moisture covers back for the doors.

As far as I can tell its some sort of non setting butyl mastic. I also know the 360 used a buytl mastic to stick up the moisture covers, so need some there too. The 940 moisture barriers are stuck in with a harder setting material.

Any suggestions? Should I just use silicone or some other jointing silkflex compound.

Just Google Butyl rope.

I recently removed the vapour panels on the doors of the V40 and wanting to replace with like for like had an awful job finding out what the original sealant was. It is very sticky and non setting, but sticks like the proverbial.

I think I bought 8mm, but if you can get it 5 or 6mm would be ideal. Very, very easy to use and yes, it sticks like the original. Apparently it is used extensively for sealing vapour barriers in house building.

I know the stuff that you are referring to. It’s very sticky and seems to remain so indefinitely. An acquaintance who used to work in a body shop advised me that it is windscreen sealant. I needed some when I removed the scuttle and wiper motor. The only stuff I could find was butyl tape which seemed to do the job but is nowhere near is sticky as the black stuff Volvo have used.

I have some of the tape/rope used for reassembly of the wings on the 360, but yeah its not that sticky and its quite firm.

What about this?

I remember seeing alot of 'Butyl' stuff mentioned in Reach for causing cancer and birth defects, maybe thats why its hard to get.

Use Nitrile gloves when handling butyl, if you're using it all of the time day in day out without the adequate PPE then you're going to start seeing dermatitis issues which may lead on to other issues. The ingredients which make up Butyl are carcinogenic, that's only if somehow inhale/ingest them, or allow the mineral oils in the butyl to make contact with your skin.

Looks very like what i've always found on the weather panel on the doors, i have used double-sided tape in the past but when i next do it would prefer the proper stuff.

Yes, that is the stuff I used on the V40.

I found it so easy to use, cleaned off the old stuff by scraping and isopropyl alcohol. Then cut a piece of plastic larger than the door and stuck it to the window glass with masking tape, then folded it back over the top of the door frame out of the way.

Stuck the butyl rope to the door in position and removed the backing paper. Then held the plastic at the bottom corners and stretched it taught whilst bringing it down to contact the butyl. Smoothed out by hand to ensure the plastic was in full contact and trimmed with scissors to shape.

They look like the stuff I bought. But it’s not as sticky as the original Volvo stuff.
It would be good to know what that Soudal stuff in post #4 byTony9 looks and feels like.

When I refitted my scuttle panel I re-stuck the grill with Tiger Seal which is a black polyurethane adhesive. It has some similar properties to the original black dum dum like sealant. Whilst it does kind of set it remains flexible. I found the original adhesive had actually given up there and I hoped the Tiger Seal would be more permanent.

I also used small blobs of Tiger Seal finally to solve the problem of my windscreen trim popping off the clips. I only applied it to the plastic clips but it’s held for several years now.

Where the original Volvo black sticky stuff has been used internally I have always found it to be reusable.
