Of course I measured what drained out and replaced it with the same amount, even added a cooler which helped even more, may Tandem up on the cooler before the summer sets in , as it can there can still be a 10-15 delay in reverse when hot, rush it and there is a Tremendous thump ! (not mountings )

added a cooler? what, for the 'box fluid? I thought it already went through the end of the rad for cooling, do they have issues with getting too hot..
Im assuming when you do that you need to add the right amount of extra fluid to account for extra piping and the cooler itself... interested to know more about that, did you do a thread on it with pictures or more details? edit: just realised you live in a somewhat hotter climate than me which may explain the need for extra cooling. on a car designed in the snow lol |

I bought an 8 row cooler ( Mishimoto) it comes with a mounting kit and pipe etc but I made up my own mountings so it was not clamped to the Rads and it was down near the lower air duct, drilled 2 holes in the plastic splash shield and cut the bottom pipe which then went to the extra cooler and then the return was connected back into the pipe that I had cut . (used 10mm brass plumbing fittings) topped up with about a Litre , made a difference, but should have gone for 12 row.

Hi all, thanks for all of your responses.
I had the car in question examined and it was definitely a fault with the gearbox. The car had also developed another fault as the previous owner had bodged a temporary fix on a hole in the cylinder head, which was a lovely surprise when it un-bodged. Black smoke everywhere. In the end I sold it to a breaker and just bought a manual V70 instead. Bit of a shame as it was a lovely car. |

Said above: "added a cooler? what, for the 'box fluid? I thought it already went through the end of the rad for cooling, do they have issues with getting too hot.."
Heat is the A#1 enemy of all automatic transmissions. Adding an auxiliary cooler is all but mandated whenever towing is involved. This suggestion goes double in our western states....especially during warm months. The foolish fiddling Ford did with our otherwise 'perfect-out-of-the-box' AW units resulted in a condition which benefited from addition of a cooler even in cooler climes. As usual, any coolers' benefit won't fix damaged parts, specifically the roughened bores/piston seals of servos damaged by "lifelong fluid", but does ameliorate the symptoms a bit. I associate places like the UK and Scandinavia -and the Western US- with 'caravan vacationing'. Even with your cooler weather, I'd add a trannie cooler if doing so. HEART WARMING FOOTNOTE: I used to care for a neighbor's 2000 Chevrolet Caprice Classic. It had a trailer towing package which included an external transmission cooler AND an external engine oil cooler....as well as every other option Chevy offered except for dead cow seating. Google up pictures of "1996-2001 Chevrolet Caprice Classic". If Volvos can be called 'bricks', these cars can be called "bars of soap in midlife". |
