V70 G/box: 2WD: Screamy auto box issues!

Hi all,

I'm new to the Volvo family and hoping for some wisdom from the collective. Recently picked up a V70 D5 auto and it's doing a bit of screaming when in Drive and foot is on the brake. It's a 2006 euro 4 model with the Aisin Warner TF-80SC box.

Sounds to me like the torque converter screaming and my current thoughts are that it's low transmission fluid, but would be nice to know if the torque converter itself is on its way out.

I'm also trying to sort out doing an ATF drain and refill a few times to clear it out a bit, but I don't currently have VIDA/DICE to sort out the level counter afterwards.

I also can't seem to find the correct parts sump seals/washers etc that I'll need, so if anybody knows the part numbers and can let me know that'd be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like an auxiliary item to me, like a power steering pump failing, alternator bearing or even a failing idler pulley.

could it be low p/s fluid? I had an old Honda accord with a leaky rack and when it squealed I knew it needed topping up

the fluid header tanks are known to leak as well, I had to replace mine not long ago

It could, yes. To the original poster, check the power steering fluid level.

That noise doesn't sound transmission related to me. It sounds like a failing pump or another auxiliary item like an alternator. Check the power steering fluid level too, as mentioned above.

Whilst the engine is running, get someone to rev the car & you have a good listen around the alternator, power steering pump etc. Check that the belt that spins on the pulleys is running 'true' & isn't wobbling all over the place, as that would indicate a failing pulley. That must be fixed immediately, as if the pulley fails & the belt falls off, it can get tangled in the timing belt & that could cost you the engine.

With regards to servicing the transmission, that's a good idea. Just make sure you use the correct spec fluid.

As you've just recently purchased the car, is there any record of the cam belt being changed in the past? If not, that's something that needs to be done... Change the auxiliary belt & auxiliary belt tensioner too.

I know its additional expense if these items haven't been replaced before, but it'll give you peace of mind. Snapped belts on a D5 can lead to very expensive engine repairs, so its a no brainer to get them replaced (if they haven't been already).

Hi all, thanks for all of your responses!

I've checked the P/S fluid level and that's all fine, and on the history it's had the belts changed in the last couple of years (although I know this should always be taken with a pinch of salt).

The strange thing is that the noise is only present when the car is in gear. When in neutral I can rev it as much as I like and the noise isn't there, which is what leads me to think it's a transmission issue.

When I come to a stop using the brakes I hear the sound go up as the engine is still in drive, before it then clicks into 'neutral' (not pushing against the brakes) and the sound goes away.

I'm hoping to get a transmission fluid change done asap, but I don't have Vida/Dice yet in order to reset the gearbox fluid counter, which I've heard is pretty essential.

I'll keep you updated with my findings!

I didn't re,set the gear box fluid counter, just put 20 litres fill and drain through it over a few weeks .

I’m assuming you measured how much fluid come out each time you drained it & put the same amount back in when filling?

If you didn’t, you’ve either got too little fluid in the transmission, or possibly too much!

reset of counter is not essential, just advisable. I did mine 3 times over a couple of months and only reset it on the last refill. the reset didn't really seem to make a lot of difference. the change of fluid was chalk and cheese it's much smoother now

I also measured it on the way out and replaced with the same, got it bang on every time, no top ups required later

oh yea and check the level after 15min of driving / 70c gear oil temp
