Exclamation 2 Different noises from back driver wheel on S40...

Hi there, looking for some help.

I recently had my rear discs & pads changed on my 2001 S40 Sport.

Now this has been done I get 2 different noises from one wheel, (Drivers rear side)

Firstly, I get a annoying squeak while driving normally; it doesn't matter if its in gear or not. It isn't constant it sounds like something is rotating... Quite hard to explain I'll try and give more detail if it helps diagnose the issue.

The 2nd noise originates from the same wheel under braking. This noise is simply a knocking one...

Any ideas how to resolve this issue? It must be caused by the pads & discs being changed as neither noises never occurred beforehand.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Andy

Hi,had a similar noise from the front of my v40 when I replaced the discs and pads-took it for a 150 mile round trip and the squeak had gone!No knock though.

Did you say you had them fitted? I'd be taking the car back to them!

The squeak could be a bent splash/mud gaurd that protects the disc.
The knocking could be that they fitted the wrong/cheap pads.

Yeah I've been back and the idiots are telling me my wheel's buckled.

Strange how I've done 20,000 miles on same set of tyres and the tread hasn't been scrubbed away!

So I'm stuck at the minute, I've got a 40 mile daily commute which I'm doing very gingerly until the weekend when I can investigate further...

I had a similar problem when I had my front pads changed by a general (and therefore cheap!) garage. I'll never do that again.

As I understand it the pads have a clip-on backing plate which doesn't come in the box with the new pads. You have to remove them from the old pads and clip them onto the new pads.

If you don't know about this then its easy to take the new pads out of the box and fit them straight in without the backing plates. I think the pads then don't fit tightly enough - hence the noises.

I assume you can buy the backing plates separately.

Riiight I'll look into that, sounds fix-able if that's my problem... !

Only thing is.... Only one side is making these noises...?

Thumbs up

UPDATE.

Problem fixed.

I'll detail my findings in case anyone else has the same problem.

Basically, when the disc was put back on theres a small screw (which is tightened with an allen key) on the hub of the disc (Not the central part ie. the bearing; its off centre)

This part wasn't tightened up properly; giving the disc some freedom to move. Although, when the wheel is off the ground it gives the impression its buckled.

Tighten that screw, all the problems go away!
