Question running costs

Hi All

I used to be a member of this forum a few years back but looks like my account has been deleted

I`ve had a Volvo 440 1.7 & a Volvo 740 saloon 2.0 GLS

I loved both cars

especially the 740 but the fuel consumption did it for me in the end as it was just too thirsty

I`m currently looking at S40 `s

what is the best model to go for for cheap(ish) running costs ?

the 1.6 or 1.8 ?

what sort of MPG can I expect ?

your thoughts would be appreciated as you can get a hell of a car for not a huge outlay

The 1.8 is quoted as being the more economical of the two, being a heavy car close to 2tonne the 1.6 really has to work to pull all that weight so it tends to be not so economical.
Expect mpg from the 1.8 to be in the mid 30's on the urban cycle and 40ish steady motorway driving.

The S40 isnt two tons the T4 weighs in at 1250kg with the non turbos slighlty lighter. Still to heavy for the 1.6 engine though and really a little heavy for the 1.8s. The best engine for economy is the 2.0T which will return very good MPG if you dont floor it everywhere. The N/A engines need to do more work to keep up with traffic and economy does suffer.

As a comparision my fathers 1.6 gave the same economy as my T4 and I drove with a lead foot and he drove very easy(slow). We both managed 26-28 around town and the T4 became much more economical at 70+mph.

Plus the GDi requires Super Unleaded does it not?
I can get up to 37mpg in my 2.0T if I don't put my foot down on a motorway run. If I get stuck behind someone doing 50 on an A road it'll do about 35. but on my 20mile round trip to work I average about 29-31mpg.
