Fair enough Ron. The water tank analogy was one I read and it seemed reasonable to me. Yes I've done many miles when I have had a dynamo failure and as you say the battery is the highest voltage supply when that happens. Didn't use the lights but got home about 100 miles later including a restart when I had to refuel. Battery was obviously in good shape although I did have another in the boot that I had bought at the event I was going to. Failure was about 30 miles from the venue. Broken armature wire, easy repair later.

Actually a broken field coil connection wire and an easy fix. Sorry, I was ready for bed!

Water analogies are often handy and great to explain simple elec systems...but they also get complex when used to explain a complex elec sys such as the automotive system can be...with two pressure/voltage sources, and a pressure/voltage sensing regulation, etc. I might think about this a bit as a mental exercise to come up with one which explains the action completely.

My Gen failure story: I once lost my Gen based Charging System (at night, In a rainstorm, so lots of elec users powered!) just outside of Kennedy Airport (2 hours from home)...I drove home on the Bat, restarted for work (and home), and only got to making repairs that evening...thank goodness for that fresh, fully charged Bat!! (I may have put it on a line [mains]-charger that first night...don't recall!)...that's when I started thinking about that upgrade to an electronically regulated Alt...
