Default Engaging neutral if battery flat

Not an issue I have encountered (thankfully) but a general question......

My elderly neighbour keeps forgetting to turn the lights off in her old automatic Toyota. She asked me for help this morning jump starting it, and when we attempted to push her car into the road for me to attach the cables, we realised it was left in "park" and as the battery was completely dead there was no way we could select Neutral.

I am vaguely aware of shift-locks and I know each car has a different way of manually unlocking this, but it had me thinking, what if my V90 (MY19) had a completely flat battery - how would I look to push it so I could jump start?

Does anyone know how you would manually disengage the shift lock, and how would you override the electronic parking brake etc?

Have you looked in the comprehensive Owners manual ? You won't release the parking brake without a 12 volt power though.

This is from the manual but as Clan said the parking brakes will most likely be on unless it is just left in park without parking brake being applied. This would require auto brakes and auto parking brake when engine switched off to be de-activated.

Cheers guys - checked the manual and found the shift lock bit, but couldn't find anything about the parking brake.

I don't think it mentions the parking brake problem in the manual but some of those who have broken down have required a crane lift onto a recovery truck as the brakes were locked on without any way of powering them off.
They can be wound off with a 9volt battery applied to the motor contacts or manually if brake motors removed.

I don't get it. Why a crane is needed if the battery is flat? The assistant vehicle can give a jump start and the parking brake will be able to be released.
If the car doesn't respond at all when power is supplied then it is a different story

They were other issues, unable to open the car or lift bonnet to connect to battery etc.

Well the car can be open with the detachable key blade in case of no power and once in the bonnet doesn't need power to open. It must have been some other serious issues.

An old Toyota would likely have a hole in the facia around the gear stick which you could push the key blade into which would release a catch which would then mean you could move it out of park.....for future reference!

Regards the Volvo, I have no idea!
